Directed by Academy Award-nominated Richard Robbins, the film spotlights young women from Nepal, Peru, Haiti, Egypt, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, India and Cambodia as they overcome obstacles in pursuit of an education.

Actresses Anne Hathaway, Kerry Washington, Meryl Streep, Salma Hayek, Cate Blanchett and Selena Gomez narrate the film. A trailer is on YouTube.

The PG-13-rated film is part of a social action campaign by 10×10 to promote the need for educating girls worldwide. It runs 100 minutes and is recommended for people age 13 and up.

“Girl Rising” will be shown at UofL’s Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium, Belknap Campus, as these times:

  • 12:15 p.m., March 21
  • 6 p.m., March 22 (doors open at 5:30 p.m. and filmgoers may stay for the planetarium show, “Oasis in Space,” at 8 p.m. for a cost of $5)
  • 3 p.m., March 24

The event is open to the campus community.
