Department of Urban and Public Affairs volunteers planted them in a months-long effort to turn an empty 4,000-square-foot area on Belknap Campus into green space. The area, known as a horticultural zone, also has a vegetable garden, clover pasture, rain barrels and compost bins.
Faculty, staff and students who worked on the project will hand out seeds from the sunflowers at a ceremony dedicating the site Oct. 23 at 4:30 p.m. The event is one of several taking place during UofL Sustainability Week, now through Oct. 29.
Other activities include:
- Where’s the Beef?!, a mini-farmer’s market at the Red Barn Oct. 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. promoting the benefits of eating less meat
- An Arbor Day tree planting and pruning workshop starting at noon Oct. 22 at the Swain Student Activities Center clock tower
- A sustainability fair with booths and free paper, computer disk and videotape shredding and recycling Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Belknap Humanities Quad
