Shiva’s free, public talk is “Violent Economic ‘Reform’ and the Growing Violence against Women.” Opposing current agribusiness practices, she advocates a return to farming methods that benefit women in India and counter the trend toward urban migration.  She is expected to make connections between feminist issues and food-production policies that she contends harm the environment.

Her lecture will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room, Swain Student Activities Center; there will be a reception afterward.

A physicist and philosopher, Shiva is director of the Research Foundation on Science, Technology and Ecology and founder of Navdanya, a movement to promote the diversity and use of native seeds rather than genetically engineered ones.

Her many books include “Making Peace with the Earth: Beyond Resource, Land and Food Wars,” “Staying Alive: Women, Ecology and Development,” “Soil Not Oil: Environmental Justice in an Age of Climate Crisis” and “Earth Democracy: Justice, Sustainability and Peace.” Shiva’s efforts earned her the Sydney Peace Foundation’s Sydney Peace Prize in 2010.

Shiva’s talk is the annual Minx Auerbach lecture in women’s and gender studies, which UofL’s women’s and gender studies department sponsors during Women’s History Month.
