The city-wide event runs through the month of October. This is what’s happening at UofL:

Exhibit: Engaging the World, Belknap Gallery, Schneider Hall
Oct. 3 opening reception, 5 p.m. ‒ 7 p.m.
On display: Photographs, videos and other artworks from students and faculty who have traveled outside of Louisville with financial support from the Hite Art Institute. The Hite has helped faculty and students attain travel experiences to provide them a competitive edge that comes from understanding diverse communities, societies and cultures and participating in a global dialogue through research, presentations and other scholarly and artistic activities. Travel experiences prompt new visions and perspectives about natural, sociological and cultural environments, ideas and issues.
Exhibit ends Nov. 10.

Exhibit: Charlotte Bracegirdle, Covi Gallery, Schneider Hall
Oct. 3 opening reception, 5 p.m. ‒ 7 p.m.
Talk: Charlotte Bracegirdle
Oct. 31 3 p.m., Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library. Reception to follow.
English painter and photographer Charlotte Bracegirdle will exhibit works that incorporate the techniques of appropriation and derivation. “I appropriate pre-existing images from Old Masters and 20th century photographic printed reproductions. I paint-out sections of the prints to reveal other aspects of the image. It changes the focus to new elements that were already present but not noticeable before and transforms the entire concept,” she explained.
Exhibit ends Nov. 10.

Conference: Film and Filmmaking in Kentucky, University Club
Oct. 4, 8:30 a.m. ‒ 3 p.m.
This conference is geared for the general public and features as speakers film critics, directors, producers, documentarians, writers, professors, film business executives and government officials. It’s intended to offer a close-up of Kentucky’s movie industry and to give a panoramic shot of its future. Registration is $25. To register, contact Janna Tajibaeva, 502-852-2247.

Exhibit: Under the Skylight: Louisville’s 19th Century Portrait Studios, Photo Archives, Ekstrom Library
Oct. 10 opening reception, 5 p.m. ‒ 7 p.m.
This exhibit features card photographs by a handful of Louisville photography studios that operated from the 1860s through 1890s. At a time before the practical application of light bulbs, photographers used skylights to illuminate their subjects. Their businesses were called “skylight studios.” The variations in portrait styles and studio props, as well as the ornate card mounts and highly stylized studio logos that adorn the cartes de visite and cabinet cards photographs on exhibit reveal trends in Victorian era photography, graphic design and advertising.
Exhibit ends Nov. 1.
