UofL officials joined developer Bill Weyland and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer on March 8 to cut the ribbon on the latest privately financed housing on Hancock Street near the HSC. It will be across the street from restaurants that Weyland’s City Properties Group plans to build.
The new, mixed-used housing targets students, faculty and staff from UofL’s medical, nursing, dental and public health schools. Students already occupy 28 new rental units in The Quad a half block north of the Clinical and Translational Research Building and University Hospital.
UofL has signed an affiliation agreement with Weyland’s group for The Quad and will set up a learning-and-living environment in that building, according to UofL Housing Director Shannon Staten. Learning-and-living communities typically bring together students in the same areas of study. A UofL faculty member is living in the 28-unit building to mentor the students who live there.
This type of affiliated housing costs UofL nothing and helps to recruit post-graduate students who want to be near their classes, labs and work, Staten said.
The entire development, called The Edge at Liberty Green, is on the site of the old Clarksdale housing project, which was torn down to make way for the mixed-use housing.
