LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The League of American Bicyclists has once again named the University of Louisville a “Bicycle Friendly University.”
The designation, which is valid through 2021, marks the second time the league has recognized UofL for its support of bicycling.
“As a bicycle commuter myself, I see how crowded our bike racks have gotten over the years,” said Justin Mog, assistant to the provost for sustainability initiatives. “I’m thrilled to see that. We know how important it is that UofL continue to provide the education, infrastructure and incentives necessary to support those who make the wise choice to get around on two, human-powered wheels. It really is the most fun, least polluting, most affordable, least dangerous and healthiest way to go.”
Among UofL’s significant achievements in bicycling are the innovative 2013-16 Earn-A-Bike program, in which staff and students who gave up a parking pass for at least two years could receive a $400 bike shop voucher, and efforts to help launch a citywide bike share system this year with stations on UofL campuses.
UofL will continue its efforts on behalf of cycling. In fall 2018, a covered bike parking area will open at the new Belknap Academic Classroom Building under construction. Additionally, stations for the citywide LouVelo bike share program, already available on the Health Sciences Campus, are expected to be installed across Belknap Campus.
UofL is one of 182 colleges and universities across the U.S. to receive the designation. The league ranks universities as either platinum, gold, silver, bronze or honorable mentions. UofL’s latest designation maintains the silver-level status it first earned in 2013.
