UofL winter commencement set for Dec. 15 David Williams to receive honorary degree for LGBTQ work

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Nearly 1,300 University of Louisville students will graduate this semester and 975 are expected to take part in the university’s Dec. 15 winter commencement at the KFC Yum! Center.

    UofL Acting President Neville Pinto will preside at the 7 p.m. event and graduating nursing student Karina Strange of Louisville will be the student speaker. Julie Bunck, a political science professor who has been named winner of the UofL Trustees Award, will be recognized during the ceremony.

    An honorary degree will be bestowed on David Williams, an activist, writer and historian who has spent more than three decades gathering and preserving archival materials related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer studies.  He established the Williams-Nichols Collection in Ekstrom Library in 1994. The collection is one of the leading archives of LGBTQ materials in the country.

    Williams, a 1968 graduate of Cincinnati-based Xavier University, will receive the honorary degree during the 3 p.m. doctoral hooding ceremony, hosted by the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies.

    Some free parking is available on surface streets near the center and paid parking is available in the center’s garage and other nearby garages.
