Students will be selling buttons and collecting money and supplies to help relief efforts that continue in the wake of an devastating earthquake that shook the Caribbean country on Jan. 12. Strong aftershocks have added to the destruction.

UofL students wanted to be part of the worldwide effort to help the Haitian people in the recovery effort, said Michael Mardis, dean of students, noting that today’s students are more civic minded and aware of what’s going on around the world.

It’s wonderful to see them using their talent, time and resources in this time of need, he said.

Groups to sell buttons

The Office of Civic Engagement, Leadership and Service has purchased 1,100 buttons that have the American Red Cross symbol and University of Louisville Disaster Relief on them. They are on sale for $3 each and can be purchased in the Dean of Students Office in the Student Activities Center. Several other campus groups also will sell them.

All proceeds will benefit Red Cross earthquake relief efforts in Haiti. If the buttons sell out, a second allotment may be ordered.

Sunday will be Haiti Day

On Sunday, the Resident Student Association will host Haiti Day from noon to 5 p.m. at the Red Barn.

The event is open to the public and will have a collection stations manned by residence halls and student groups from across campus. Attendees are asked to provide a monetary donation or to bring such items as baby food, canned food, personal hygiene items, clothing or medical supplies. Donations will go to the American Red Cross and other Haiti relief agencies.

A local deejay will provide music; Sodexo, UofL’s dining services provider, will supply food.

The event will also feature several giveaways for people who make donations, including two tickets to the UofL men’s basket game against Syracuse, two $100 Sodexo meal cards, football game vouchers and UofL apparel.

We wanted to do our part in helping the victims of the earthquake, said Sean Bogle, RSA adviser. We wanted to show that UofL students care and can make an impact beyond campus.
