The Fort Knox-University of Louisville-Community Partnership Advisory Board, a 16-member panel formed in June, is developing more than 20 new projects aimed at increasing cooperation among UofL, Fort Knox and the community, said Renee Finnegan, UofL’s executive director of military initiatives and partnerships.

The group’s goal is to “create a valued and lasting, military-friendly partnership that recognizes and respects, in all aspects of their career, the men and women who serve,” she said.

Possible projects include:

  • Participation in research studies of traumatic brain injury, post traumatic stress disorder and other medical problems associated with the military
  • Creation of leadership programs
  • Seminars and training conferences in human resources, workforce leadership and other areas
  • Expansion of a UofL continuing education program at Fort Knox
  • Exchange of ideas and projects in business and engineering

Supporting military and veteran students is one of UofL’s top strategic priorities, Finnegan said.

In 2010, UofL opened a new office to help such students with issues related to classes, enrollment, credit transfer and financial aid.

This year, some 880 veterans are enrolled at UofL and another 140 active duty and civilian students at Fort Knox are pursuing bachelor’s degrees in workforce leadership.
