Representatives from the ACC led by Commissioner John Swofford were on hand to make the formal announcement, joining UofL President James Ramsey and Vice President for Athletics Tom Jurich at a news conference Tuesday at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.
We have looked forward to this day since November 2012, Swofford said. The past two years have been ones of tremendous growth for our conference and the University of Louisville. Today we add another page to that chapter. It’s a landmark day for us to welcome UofL into the ACC.
For UofL, membership in the ACC is not just about joining one of the nation’s premiere athletic conferences. It is a clear representation of the strides UofL has made, both academically and athletically, to fulfill our state mandate of becoming one of the nation’s best metropolitan research universities.
Our university is on an amazing trajectory, Ramsey said. And what better academic and athletic neighborhood to be in than the ACC? We have new collaboration opportunities that we haven’t had before. This is just the tip of the iceberg as we strive to get better and better.
A luncheon with hundreds of university staff and faculty followed the news conference, and an ACC Celebration Event, complete with a video presentation and band, was scheduled for Fourth Street Live! beginning at 6 p.m.
