LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Two artists will bring their expertise in Asian traditions and forms to share in workshops with University of Louisville students and the public this month.
Jackson Li will teach traditional Chinese brush-making techniques March 19 in a daylong workshop. The brushes can be used for calligraphy, watercolor and ceramic decoration.
The workshop is free to observe. Participants who wish to make two brushes of their own during the afternoon will pay a $25 materials fee.
The brush workshop will last from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Schneider Hall. Li also will give a slide and video lecture about his work, Chinese ceramic traditions and the work of the Jingdezhen Sanboa Ceramic Art Institute in the People’s Republic of China. The latter, free session will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Art League Gallery of Schneider Hall.
The next week Akio Takamori of the University of Washington will give a two-day, free public workshop in U of L’s ceramics studio of the Health, Physical Education and Sports Studies Building at Floyd and Warnock streets. U of L’s Ceramic Arts Organization is sponsoring his visit.
Takamori has exhibited across the United States and is known for his figurative clay sculptures that draw on Japanese traditions. Takamori worked as an apprentice in a Japanese production pottery operation before moving to the United States for further college education. He has won several National Endowment for the Arts grants for his work.
Takamori’s workshop will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 28 and 29. He will give a free lecture about his personal artwork at 5:30 p.m. March 28, also in the U of L ceramics studio.
