LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Theatergoers can come to the cabaret when the University of Louisville Belknap Theater presents “The Threepenny Opera” Nov. 28-Dec. 2 in the Playhouse.
Patrons will enter a 1930s-style cabaret and will be seated at tables in the middle of the action as drama, songs and chase scenes occur around them. Actors will serve refreshments to them before the show and at intermission.
Gina Kaufmann, U of L theater arts faculty member, is directing the musical satire by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. Written in 1928 as an adaptation of “Beggar’s Opera,” the play about the business class’s hypocrisy is presented in storytelling form.
Musicians from U of L’s School of Music will perform some of the selections. The play’s songs include Weill’s “Ballad of Mack the Knife.”
Actors in the small ensemble play many, quickly shifting roles, using theatrical costumes by Zhanna Goldentul to facilitate the character changes.
Performances are at 8 p.m. nightly, with additional Saturday and Sunday matinees at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 for the general public, $9 for senior citizens and U of L employees and $7 for students. For reservations or group prices, call the box office at (502) 852-6814.
The Playhouse is on Cardinal Boulevard between Second and Third streets at the edge of U of L’s Belknap Campus.
