LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The eyes of the world turned to Louisville this year as unprecedented medical breakthroughs stole headlines. Now in its sixth year, Research!Louisville will give the world an entire week to peer into the laboratories where the roads to medical breakthroughs begin.
The partners of the Louisville Medical Center, University of Louisville Health Sciences Center, Jewish Hospital Foundation, Norton Health Care and University of Louisville Hospital will join forces to showcase medical research at all stages along the road to clinical fruition. From Monday, Oct. 29, through Friday, Nov. 2, researchers will offer updates on topics ranging from the AbioCor artificial heart, sickle cell disease, end-of-life issues and hospital-based nursing research.
Two new features have been added to the Research!Louisville line-up. On Tuesday, Oct. 30, LMC researchers will spend the day at the Louisville Science Center celebrating “The World Within Us.” Medical professionals will offer presentations to schoolchildren all morning and to the general public in the afternoon on a variety of health and research topics. In addition, presentations will be viewed by schoolchildren statewide through Kentucky’s tele-education network.
“I’m exited about the involvement of the Louisville Science Center,” said John Barker, chair of the Research!Louisville planning committee and director of biomedical economic development at U of L. “This gives the scientists in charge of some of the most exciting research around the chance to talk to school-age children and the general public about it. That doesn’t happen every day.”
The other new addition is the focus on inter-disciplinary and collaborative research. Three different programs on Wednesday, Oct. 31, will update the public on the nature of research that includes elements from health sciences, engineering, arts and business.
“The more we learn in the health sciences, the more we realize what we can accomplish by working with colleagues in other fields,” Barker said. “This type of collaboration really puts scientific discovery on the fast track.”
