LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Students will pay a little more to attend the University of Louisville next year.

The U of L Board of Trustees today approved 6-percent tuition increases for 2002-2003 and 2003-2004. Kentucky resident undergraduate students taking a full 12-hour class schedule will see their per-semester tuition increase from the current rate of $1,897 to $2,016 in 2002-2003 and to $2,136 in 2003-2004.

Similar increases will take effect at the university’s graduate, law, medical and dental schools.

The tuition increase was proposed after an internal tuition-setting workgroup that included faculty, staff and students examined a variety of analyses, rates of local and regional schools, tuition rates of benchmark schools and the university’s mission and needs.

Along with state funding, the tuition increase will help support the initiatives in the Challenge for Excellence, U of L’s strategic plan to attain a position as one of the nation’s top metropolitan universities. In addition, the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education advocates that tuition revenue generate about 37 percent of a university’s institutional operating funds. With the increase, tuition will account for about 34 percent of U of L’s operating funds.
