LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The complex balance of work and family is the theme of a free, public lecture series this fall at the University of Louisville.
The four talks, also part of a course in women’s studies, will begin at 4 p.m. Thursdays in Room 300, Bingham Humanities Building, unless otherwise indicated.
- Sept. 13, “Toward a New Fulltime Norm: Promoting Work-Life Balance Through Work-Time Adjustment.” Speaker will be Cynthia Negrey, a U of L associate sociology professor who has studied job training for women leaving welfare for the Institute for Women’s Policy Research in Washington, D.C.
- Oct. 4, “Balancing Work and Family: How Equally Sharing Couples Halve It All.” Speaker will be Francine Deutsch, Mount Holyoke College social psychologist; she wrote the book “Halving It All: How Equally Shared Parenting Works” about her National Science Foundation-funded study of dual-earner couples with children. Deutsch’s talk in Ekstrom Library Auditorium will be followed by a reception, book sale and book signing.
- Nov. 1, “Single Motherhood, Employment or Social Assistance: Why Are U.S. Women Poorer Than Women In Other Affluent Nations?” Speaker will be Karen Christopher, University of Pittsburgh assistant sociology professor.
- Nov. 15, “Child Care.” Panel discussion will feature Elizabeth Rightmyer, U of L assistant professor of teaching and learning; Susan Reeves, director of Louisville’s Community Coordinated Child Care; and Sheila Marable, U of L alumna and staff member.
