LOUISVILLE, Ky. – One of the nation’s leading experts on the life of astronomer Edwin Hubble will speak at the University of Louisville April 25.
Gale Christianson, distinguished professor of the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana State University, will speak on “Edwin Hubble: An Astronomer’s Life” at 2 p.m. in the Rauch Planetarium.
Hubble is regarded by many as the greatest astronomer of the 20th century. He was the first to prove that the Milky Way is one of countless galaxies in the universe, and he showed that the universe is expanding. Many of today’s most impressive images of the universe come from the space telescope that bears Hubble’s name.
Before pursuing his career in astronomy, Hubble lived in Louisville and taught high school and coached basketball in New Albany, Ind.
Christianson is a Guggenheim fellow and the recipient of other research and writing awards. He has written several books, including “Edwin Hubble: Mariner of Nebulae,” “Isaac Newton and His Times” and “Greenhouse: The 200-Year Story of Global Warming.”
