LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville honored hundreds of faculty and staff who have volunteered in the community during its 8th annual Staff Recognition Luncheon Friday, April 27, at the University Club.

Brenda Gunn, director of the U of L Office of Community Relations, noted that the university’s employees have documented more than 17,000 hours of community service and helped about 800,000 people in the past year. The actual amount of service is substantially higher, she said, noting that many volunteers underestimate their time and others avoid attention for their activities.

U of L presented outstanding service awards to faculty member Alan Johnson for his work with the St. John Center for the Homeless and staff member Dave Shaw for his efforts on behalf of Habitat for Humanity – Indiana.

The university also recognized Dr. Lucy Freibert, a retired English professor, for more than 50 years of community service. Freibert has worked with dozens of organizations, including Pleiades Theater, the U of L Women’s Center and Project Women.

U of L recognized Hospice and Palliative Care as its outstanding community organization.
