LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville School of Public Health and Information Sciences (SPHIS) is celebrating its grand opening today at 485 E. Gray Street.

The $5.1 million renovation of the former Home of the Innocents building includes the latest technology, computer labs, seminar rooms and office space. The upgrades will help SPHIS integrate technology into its teaching curriculum and improve collaboration with the Louisville Metro Department of Health and Wellness, located just across the street.

The renovation includes details that support UofL’s goals to become a leader in sustainability. Features include bamboo floors and lighting designed with sensors and other timers to minimize energy use when rooms and offices are not in use.

About 100 faculty, staff and graduate research assistants moved into the building in December.

“We’re really proud of our contribution to Kentucky’s workforce development efforts. In the last three years, enrollment in the Master of Public Health Program has nearly doubled to 78 students – mirroring the demand for skilled public health professionals in Kentucky and nationwide,” said SPHIS Dean Richard Clover .

In October 2007, SPHIS received full accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health, becoming one of only 40 accredited schools in the nation and the only one that combines the disciplines of public health and information sciences.
