LOUISVILLE, Ky. – National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Toots Thielemans and award-winning saxophonist Houston Person are among the featured performers at the UofL Jazz Week 2010, Feb. 23 – 28.
Called one of the greatest musicians of our time by Grammy Legend Award Winner Quincy Jones, Thielemans, 87, rarely makes appearances outside of Belgium. His only U.S. appearances in 2010 will be at New York City’s Lincoln Center and at UofL in a duo setting with pianist Kenny Werner at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 28.
Thielemans was a member of Charlie Parker’s All Stars, composed the jazz standard “Bluesette” and was harmonica soloist for film scores such as “Midnight Cowboy.”
Saxophonist Person, a sideman with such greats as Etta James, Lena Horne and Lou Rawls, won the Eubie Blake Jazz Award in 1982 and the Independent Jazz Record of the Year Award in 1990, among other prestigious awards. Person will perform with UofL’s Jazz Ensemble I 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 27.zz,/pz.
