Africa in April Week examines contemporary art

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The annual Africa in April Week takes a look at contemporary African visual arts with public events April 6 at the University of Louisville and April 8 at the Louisville Visual Art Association.

    The activities are intended to raise awareness about African art, to change perceptions of Africa and its people and to foster connections among African groups and others.

    The free, public events are:

    April 6 – screening of Nigerian film “Scorned,” 2 p.m., Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library

    April 8 – Public discussion with Songs for Seba owner and Louisville artist Daniel Horton, North Carolina digital artist-painter Acha Debela and New York City’s Contemporary African Art Gallery director Bill Karg, plus closing reception of works by Debela and Louisville youth inspired by African artists, 6 p.m., Louisville Visual Art Association, 3005 River Road

    Sponsors are UofL’s Pan-African studies department, Cultural Center, Black Faculty/Staff Association and Association of Black Students, along with the LVAA, Louisville Central Community Centers and other community representatives.
