LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Elections will be the talk of the community, so it’s only natural that the Yearlings Club-University of Louisville discussion series this fall will focus mainly on candidates and the future.
The lineup includes school board and mayoral candidate forums and a post-election analysis, plus a holiday jazz concert to round out the year.
The Yearlings Club and UofL’s College of Arts and Sciences organize the annual free, public events aimed at bringing people in Louisville together with UofL faculty members to explore issues, share expertise and forge common bonds. The club is devoted to civic responsibility, community service and leadership development.
Most events run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month at the Yearlings Club, 4309 W. Broadway, and include refreshments and networking opportunities. Exceptions are the Sept. 12 and Oct. 10 programs, which have been moved to the NIA Center, 2900 W. Broadway.
The fall series includes:
Sept. 12 – “Candidate Forum for Jefferson County Public School Board,” school board candidates for the District 1 seat (western and downtown Louisville). Candidates Diane Porter, Attica Woodson Scott, Bonnie Lash Freeman and Phyllis Morton are expected to discuss the school assignment plan and their views on key education issues as well as answer questions. NIA Center.
Oct. 10 – “Candidate Forum for Mayor,” Democrat Greg Fischer, Republican Hal Heiner and Independent Jackie Green are invited to discuss their priorities in vying to become the highest elected official in Louisville metro government, NIA Center.
Nov. 14 – “Election Analysis: What Just Happened?” invited panelists include Ricky Jones, UofL Pan-African studies professor and political scientist, and the chairs of the Jefferson County Democratic and Republican parties. The panel is expected to talk about local, state and national elections as well as look forward to the 2012 presidential race.
Dec. 12 – “Holiday Jazz Event”
