SHELBYVILLE, Ky.— The KIPDA Rural Diabetes Coalition, using a $2.5 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will work to reduce the prevalence of the disease in Shelby, Bullitt and Henry counties.
Officials from the Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development Agency and the University of Louisville announced plans to collaborate on the five-year effort before the coalition’s first meeting today at Shelbyville’s Stratton Center.
The three counties have been identified as having high incidence of diabetes. The coalition effort is particularly aimed at reducing diabetes-related inequalities in vulnerable populations such as older adults, minorities and low-income residents.
