LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A group of 14 students, faculty and staff from the University of Louisville will leave March 9 for a 10-day study abroad program in Havana, Cuba.
The visit is part of a Cuban cultural studies class offered by the Department of Classical and Modern Languages in the College of Arts and Sciences and is believed to be the first UofL-organized Cuban student study abroad program.
During the tour, the group will visit history and art museums, diverse neighborhoods, galleries, studios, institutes and schools for film and television to understand how current social-cultural issues may have been impacted by Cuban art and film.
According to Nefertiti Burton, associate dean for international, diversity and outreach programs and trip organizer, the tour also will give students opportunities to meet local residents and observe their daily routines and customs.
“Havana is renowned as a vital wellspring of African diasporic culture, a leading center of modern Latino arts and, since 1959, the capital of one of the world’s longest-running experiments in socialism,” Burton said. “This program offers an opportunity to witness the city’s rich artistic and political legacies.”
