LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Before the Louisville Cardinals and Florida Gators face off on the field at the Allstate Sugar Bowl, fans of both teams will have a chance to connect with each other through a New Orleans community service project.
The University of Louisville, University of Florida and Sankofa Community Development Corp. in New Orleans will sponsor the project the morning of the Jan. 2 bowl game.
The three organizations are seeking volunteers to help build an urban garden at 27 St. Claude Ct. in the city’s Ninth Ward through the project, an official part of bowl festivities. Activities will include shoveling, planting and cleaning up trash at the site.
Sankofa is a nonprofit organization working to revitalize New Orleans’ Lower and Upper Ninth Ward communities by educating residents about the importance of growing and eating healthy foods and increasing their access to fresh produce.
UofL students, parents, faculty, staff, administrators and alumni are invited to sign up for the project, which will be limited to 50 volunteers. Work will start at 9:30 a.m. and end at noon.
Bus transportation will be provided to the site from the New Orleans Marriott, 555 Canal St.and back to the hotel.
Volunteers must sign up at louisville.edu/studentaffairs/volunteer2012sugarbowl/ by Dec. 27.
