Students to pitch ideas for business start-ups

    LOUISVILLE, Ky.–Swim goggles that display stats during workouts. A phone app that monitors blood sugar in diabetic kids. A tooth varnish that fights gum disease.

    Those are just some of the business start-up ideas University of Louisville entrepreneurship students will unveil Oct. 11-12 at the 2013 Ballard Morton New Venture Competition at UofL’s College of Business. The contest is free and open to the public.

    Seven teams of 29 UofL student entrepreneurs—five graduate teams and two undergraduate teams—will vie for top honors at the event, which offers more than $40,000 in prize money and the opportunity to advance to regional and national business plan contests.

    The teams will take part in a “fast pitch” round from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 11 and will give full-length presentations from 8:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Oct. 12. Judges will name winners at 3:15 p.m. Oct. 12.

    Besides WadeZ interactive swim goggles, Diatech blood glucose app and PlaqAway tooth varnish, the other business start-up ideas include:
