In 2007, to celebrate its centennial, the College of Arts and Sciences created the A&S Hall of Honor. Twenty people were inducted in that first ceremony, including Johnny Unitas, Harriette Arnow, Sue Grafton, Bob Edwards, U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell and Junior Bridgeman.

2.) Announcing the 2015-16 Book-In-Common: This I Believe
UofL will be reading “This I Believe,” edited by Jay Allison and Dan Gediman. “This I Believe” essays work well in any discipline and are a great tool for engaging student thinking about course content. Students at all levels have been excited about using the essays in the classroom and participating in related activities. Contact firstyear@louisville.edu for resources to support your involvement, from integrating the text into the classroom to serving on a faculty panel.
3.) Ekstrom Reference and Information Literacy Department: new name, new location
The Ekstrom Library Reference and Information Literacy Department is transitioning to a new name, and we have moved to a new location. Our new name is Research Assistance and Instruction. We can now be found in Ekstrom Room 217 while our first floor office space is renovated (through August 2015). Please continue to send your students for help with research assignments! We are available via walk-in, appointments, phone, chat or e-mail.

UofL’s Middle East and Islamic Studies program and the Midwest Association for Middle East and Islamic Studies are pleased to present this joint conference featuring keynote speaker Asma Afsaruddin, chair and professor, Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, Indiana University. Sessions will take place Thursday and Friday. The keynote address will be Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Chao auditorium.

6.) Brown & Williamson Scholar Seminar: Ligand binding mechanisms and trypsin-like proteases

Enrico Di Cera, MD, from Saint Louis University, will present a seminar as part of the Brown & Williamson Scholar Program. His research focuses on the structure, function, regulation, and engineering of trypsin-like proteases. The talk is titled Mechanisms of ligand binding: a critical appraisal. The chemistry dpartment serves as host.

7.) Self-coordinating buses improve service
April 16, 3 to 4 p.m., Vogt Engineering, Room 311

The main challenge for an urban bus system is to maintain constant headways between successive buses. Most bus systems try to adhere to a schedule, but the natural dynamics of the system tend to collapse headways so that buses travel in bunches. We have devised a method of coordinating buses that abandons the idea of a target schedule or even any target headway and instead allows equal headways to emerge spontaneously.

12.) Shared Decision Making: Not your ordinary quality improvement initiative

This talk will be given by Richard Wexler, MD, chief integration officer, Healthwise. Dr. Wexler has 25 years of experience leading quality improvement initiatives and six years of experience implementing shared-decision-making programs in varied provider settings. The strategies he has developed and implemented enable clinicians and patients to more effectively use decision aids. He works closely with provider organizations and policy-setting groups and is widely recognized as a leader in shared decision making.
