UofL ‘s original School of Public Health was open from 1919 to 1924, making it one of the first schools of public health in the United States. View displays of artwork from Creative Diversity, a local studio where individuals with disabilities create art, and help us create art by signing our iCOUNT canvas. Watch videos of individuals with disabilities talking about the unique perspectives they have to offer, and learn about other public figures with disabilities. Learn how campus offices are contributing to an inclusive campus and how you can do the same.

2.) Funding available for the 2015 Kentucky Pedagogicon
Deadline to request funding is April 17
The Delphi Center will provide funding for conference registration and mileage for up to 15 UofL faculty and staff members to attend this year’s 2015 Kentucky Pedagogicon in Richmond. Funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis with preference given to UofL presenters and faculty. From 2011 to 2013, the Pedagogicon was part of the Kentucky Innovation Conference and is now a joint production of the CPE, the CPE Faculty Development Workgroup and Eastern Kentucky University.

5.) Better Breathers Club to meet

Better Breathers Clubs are support groups for people with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and other lung diseases including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Together, members learn skills to help manage their condition and improve their quality of life. Attendees will take part in discussions with health care practitioners and be provided information on community resources and research available at UofL. This month’s topic, Respiratory Medications.

6.) HR Workshop – Eating for a Healthier You

8.) Neuroscience Day registration redo
It has come to our attention that the online registration form did not work correctly for all registrants. If you did not receive email confirmation when you registered for Neuroscience Day, please register again. If you are unsure, you can search for email with NS-Day Registration in the subject line, or you can just register again and we will delete duplicate registrations. Please re-register if needed by Friday, April 10. The event will take place April 23 in the CTRB.

9.) Scheduled electrical outage for select Belknap locations Friday

An electrical outage is scheduled for the following Belknap Campus buildings: Service Complex, S/CW Plant and Development for University Relations (Fairfax).
10.) Student trip to Cuba for credit planned
June 2, Urban and Public Affairs
Travel to Cuba to participate in people-to-people exchanges and learn about planning, historic preservation, sustainable development, planning and architecture in one of the few truly socialist countries left in the world. Deposits are due April 15. This program is an exceptional value, with non-stop air from Miami, accommodations, daily breakfast, several dinners, visa and English-speaking guides. Estimated costs for this seven-day program are around $1,950 for double occupancy. We propose teaching this class as two classes providing up to six credits. We also require two-week prep course of readings and guest lectures prior to the trip. This course counts as elective credit in Public Administration, Planning and Urban and Public Affairs.

11.) LALS Club needs household items for Kentucky Refugee Ministries

The Latin American and Latino Studies Club is collecting household items (toiletries, bed sheets, towels, dishes, etc.) for Kentucky Refugee Ministries. These items will be used to furnish the homes of refugees who have recently moved to Kentucky. Please drop off all donations in the LALS offices (Stevenson 304-306) between now and April 22.

16.) Shared Decision Making: Not your ordinary quality improvement initiative

This talk will be given by Richard Wexler, MD, chief integration officer, Healthwise. Dr. Wexler has 25 years of experience leading quality improvement initiatives and six years of experience implementing shared-decision-making programs in varied provider settings. The strategies he has developed and implemented enable clinicians and patients to more effectively use decision aids. He works closely with provider organizations and policy-setting groups and is widely recognized as a leader in shared decision making.

17.) Lecture to commemorate Remembrance Day

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in the School of Medicine will host a special lecture to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz and Holocaust Remembrance Day. Joern Soltau, MD, associate professor of ophthalmology, will give a presentation titled, “From Genetics to Genocide.” This special lecture is open to the entire community and light refreshments will be served. Staff will be on site to escort all guests to the Conference Center and parking will be available in the lot behind the Kentucky Lions Eye Center.
