Let the re-enactors of Locust Grove take you on a tour of the house before joining history professor Daniel Vivian and Locust Grove executive director Carol Ely for refreshments and discussion. 3.) CEHD dean candidate to visit campus Feb. 18 and 19
10:30 a.m. – Noon Feb. 18, Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library
The fourth finalist for dean of the College of Education and Human Development, Larry Daniel, PhD, will visit campus Feb. 18 and 19. Daniel is a professor in the Department of Leadership, School Counseling, and Sport Management at the University of North Florida, where he also serves as dean in the College of Education and Human Services. Daniel will present an open forum at 10:30 a.m. in the Chao Auditorium Feb. 18. For more information, email Connie Kidd.
4.) Part-Time Faculty Institute: Supporting Students in Distress
5:30 pm. – 7:30 p.m. March 6, Delphi Center, Room 244, Ekstrom Library
Students have many physical and mental stresses that impact their performance in the academic context. Resources exist to help students, but some faculty members are often unaware how to find these resources and how to help students who may need assistance. Join us for dinner as we explore practical suggestions with regard to a range of challenges such as proper responses for disruptive students in class to knowing where and how to refer/help students find resources they may need. 5.) Blackboard course from spring 2013 to be archived and deleted
Blackboard courses from spring 2013 (4132) will be archived and then deleted after Friday, March 21. This is a semi-annual process by the Delphi Center that frees up server space for new courses. If you have a specific need to keep a spring 2013 course available beyond March 21, please submit a request by that date. Additional information on this process can be found in the Blackboard News module on the login page.

6.) Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP)
The SROP provides UofL undergraduate students who would like to know more about graduate-level education at the university with a 10-week, research-intensive experience in a department that offers graduate degrees. Mentors will provide students with individualized research projects. All UofL departments with graduate programs will be supported. Students should be in their sophomore or junior year of study. The deadline is March 3.

Maxine Brown will speak on the new Southern Indiana African American Heritage Trail through Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Gibson, Jefferson and Orange Counties in Indiana. 8.) McConnell Center Talk: God and Country-Religion and the Future of Democracy in America

In this free McConnell Center talk, University of Notre Dame political science professor Patrick Deneen, PhD, will consider Alexis de Tocqueville’s “Democracy in America” and how religion affects the future of democracy in America. While some political thinkers consider religion problematic for a democratic society, Tocqueville believed that America’s religious sentiments were a key force in the success and stability of democracy. What do current trends mean for the future of democracy?

9.) HSC Educator Grand Rounds: Transforming Lecture into a More Powerful Pedagogy

Peg Weissinger, EdD, associate dean for assessment and educational scholarship and assistant professor, Department of Family Medicine, Georgetown University School of Medicine, will present at Health Science Educator Grand Rounds. Weissinger has extensive experience in faculty development and has given more than 50 presentations on curricular development, assessment and faculty development at academic conferences and meetings. 1.0 CME Category 1 offered. 10.) Intersecting Oppressions: Women and 20 Years of Democracy in South Africa

Talk and poetry reading by South African activist, feminist and poet Bernedette Muthien. She will address the 20th anniversary of democracy in South Africa, the anti-apartheid activism leading up to it, and persistent intersections of race, color, class and patriarchy Muthien continues to address in her life and work as a cultural activist. Reception/book signing to follow. Co-sponsored by Anne Braden Institute, Women’s and Gender Studies; Peace, Justice, and Conflict Transformation; and IDOP.
