UofL’s Delta Zeta sorority was featured on national television Tuesday when the Today show aired a story about the sorority’s efforts to break stereotypes about sorority members. The #BreaktheStereotype effort, in which a cliché was written on one hand and a truth about themselves was written on the other, appeared on the sorority’s Facebook page last week. 1.) Debate members receive top honors at weekend tournament
Seniors Arnav Wheat and William (Wes) Tolbert were awarded First and Second Speaker Awards, respectively, at the Hoosier Invitational debate tournament, held Jan. 29 to Feb.1 at Indiana University Bloomington. Wheat and Tolbert ended the tournament as the second place team in the Junior Varsity division.

2.) French Film Festival opens Thursday
Feb. 4, 5 p.m. & 8 p.m., Floyd Theatre – Student Activities Center
Free and open to the public
The Speed Museum film curator Dean Otto will open the 2016 French Film Fest with Timbuktu, the Oscar-nominated film from Mauritania. The film series will run through February and early March with classic and contemporary screenings, including Jean Luc-Goddard’s Pierrot le Fou. The 5 p.m. screening includes a discussion with film and French experts.

The Malcolm X Debate Program and First Year Initiatives invite you to a fun and fast-moving experience in critical political analysis and rhetorical response. Faculty and staff are invited to nominate undergraduate students to apply for Mortar Board National Senior Honorary. Requirements are excellence in scholarship, leadership and service. The chapter is active in service to campus and the community with an Academic Hall of Fame, soup kitchen help and public lectures. Requirements include a GPA of 3.15 and 60 current credit hours. 10.) Summer 2016 FoodWorks Internships Info Session

Learn how UofL students can participate in the FoodWorks Program run by Middlebury College. FoodWorks is an innovative summer leadership program combining academic and experiential learning. It features: nine intensive weeks in Louisville, Vermont, or D.C. (June 5 – Aug. 4); a paid internship; a 3-cr course in “Exploring local food systems”; a group living and cooking experience and weekly field trips. This is a chance to touch, taste, and work with all aspects of the local food movement.

Topic: Painting/Politics/Photography: Marlene Dumas and the Figuration of Difference. This lecture will look at the politics of portrayal, photography and figuration in relation to the colonial/apartheid archive. It focuses on Marlene Dumas’ reworking of selected images – both personal and public – in order to question contemporary painting’s capacity to address history, in particular its spectacular/photogenic trace.

UofL psychology major Filder Auma has worked in refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia. She will tell her inspiring story of overcoming rape, torture and blindness to devote her life to helping others, both in Africa and in Louisville. Members of the university and the public are invited to this free lecture. Light refreshments and a chance to talk with Ms. Auma will follow the lecture.
