The Robert and Sue Ellen Ackerson Law Clinic at the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law was created in the spring semester of the 2009-2010 academic year. The clinic helps clients in emergency protective order, divorce and housing cases. Clients are represented by law students, who perform the work for free under supervision.

Join StageOne Family Theatre and the Kentucky Center as they collaborate with the Kentucky Autism Training Center for a sensory-friendly performance of “And in This Corner…Cassius Clay” on Saturday. Additional materials to prepare loved ones for the show are online.

2.) Learn to weave in ‘Introduction to Weaving’

Free for UofL faculty, staff and students, but registration is required
The Little Loom House/Lou Tate Foundation will conduct an introductory weaving workshop at the Carnegie Center led by Mona Caton. Participants will be able to experience and practice harness weaving techniques. The Carnegie Center for Art and History is a member of the Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.

3.) Join fellow Cards fans at the 5th Annual ASAP and RBAA Game Watch

Free and open to the public; donations accepted
Join the ASAP (Arts and Sciences Ambassador Program) and the RBAA (Red Barn Alumni Association) game watch for the UofL vs. Pitt men’s basketball game from Pittsburgh. A drawing will be held for three basketballs autographed by All-Americans Darrell Griffith and Russ Smith and Hall of Fame Coach Denny Crum, and an autographed copy of the book The One Day Contract, by Coach Rick Pitino. Food and beverages provided. Donations accepted to benefit UofL students and checks received are 100 percent tax deductible.

4.) It’s never too late to think about quitting smoking

Become your own success story by registering for Get Healthy Now’s smoking cessation program. Smoking cessation classes use the Cooper-Clayton Method, a comprehensive behavioral smoking cessation program that was started more than 20 years ago by Thomas Cooper, DDS, a dentist and former heavy smoker, and Richard Clayton, PhD, an expert on drug addiction. This highly successful program is science based and uses proven methods, including education, skills training and social support.

5.) Title IX Mandatory Reporter Training
Free
Title IX focuses on the adverse consequences faced by victims of gender discrimination and sexual harassment and creates obligations for the University to investigate and to provide a “prompt and effective remedy.” If a student tells you they have been sexually harassed or discriminated against, do you have a responsibility under Title IX to report it? Come to this informative session to learn more about your obligation and role in Title IX.

7.) Safe Zone II presented by the LGBT Center and HSC Office of Diversity and Inclusion
Feb. 11, noon to 1:30 p.m., Abell Administration Building, Room 109
Allyship is important work and Safe Zone II will help you further explore and develop your skills while working as a good ally. During this training we will explore LGBT concepts, understand our personal journeys towards allyship, and think critically about how to apply the principles you learn. Finally, we will develop a plan and action steps for your allyship practice. Come learn how to become an active ally working to make a positive difference in the lives of LGBT people! 8.) Part-time Faculty Institute presents workshop on supporting students in distress
Feb. 12, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Delphi Center, Ekstrom Library, room 244
Students have many physical and mental stresses that impact their performance in the academic context. University resources exist to help students, but faculty members may not know how to find these resources to help students who may need assistance. Using case studies, we will explore practical suggestions with regard to a range of challenges, from proper responses for disruptive students in class to knowing where and how to refer/help students find resources they may need.

Interested in weaving themes of ecological, social and economic stewardship into your courses? The Sustainability Council invites full- or part-time faculty and GTA Academy members from all disciplines to participate in the April 2015 Green Threads workshop. We’ll explore ways to embed sustainability in your curriculum. You’ll receive a $500 honorarium, resources for course development, info on local sustainability issues and a new network of colleagues from across UofL. Applications due March 25.

Professor David Weinberg will give a talk titled “Cosmological Highlights from the ‘Sloan Digital Sky Survey.’” His talk will concentrate on those highlights connected to cosmology and galaxy formation. He will summarize plans and prospects for SDSS-IV, which began in July 2014.

Winsor Schmidt, JD, UofL professor of family and geriatric medicine, presents Proxy Decision-Making for Persons with Dementia. Attendees will understand problems and issues concerning the kinds of proxy decision-making for people with dementia, including advance directives, family consent statutes and guardianship.
