Information Technology
1.) Network upgrade to affect access to enterprise systems, network connectivity at night
10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24 ‒ 2 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25
IT will perform a network upgrade during the regular preventive maintenance period preventing access to all major enterprise systems, including Blackboard, email, instant messaging, PeopleSoft, ULink, SharePoint, voice and data services, and VPN. 2.) Still using Windows XP? Support will end in April 2014
Microsoft support for XP will end April 8 in accordance with Microsoft’s Support Lifecycle policy. After this date, there will be no new security updates or virus definitions, and free or paid assisted support options or online technical content updates for XP will no longer be available. Unsupported operating systems are vulnerable to security risks. IT recommends that you upgrade to Windows 7. The new Windows 8 operating system is not fully compatible with UofL applications. 3.) URL correction: Nucleus LaunchIt training program – spring 2014
The EVPRI will offer a limited-competitive opportunity to assist full-time faculty, staff or students with partial reimbursement for the registration fee for the spring 2014 LaunchIt training program. This program will assist entrepreneurs with startup and early stage companies. A pre-proposal is required. For deadlines and other details click here.

5.) UofL Golf Club offering discounts to faculty, staff
UofL has recently purchased the Cardinal Club Golf Course and is currently making renovations to ‘Cardinalize’ the clubhouse. 7.) GRE workshop, lunch, practice exam

Psi Chi will sponsor a GRE workshop (Kaplan conducted), lunch and practice exam. Registration is now open to anyone interested in attending graduate school (students, faculty, family, friends). Preregistration and payment are due no later than Thursday, Jan. 30. Forward cash or check (payable to Psi Chi) to Psi Chi, 317 Life Sciences, Belknap Campus. Include “GRE Workshop,” your name and email, along with your sandwich selection of ham, turkey, roast beef or veggie. Details will be emailed to you.

In this free McConnell Center talk, UofL political science professor Jasmine Farrier, PhD, will consider Alexis de Tocqueville’s “Democracy in America” and how widespread distrust in political institutions affects the future of democracy in America. While some consider democracy to be about the ballot box, Tocqueville considered the success of democracy in America to be based on healthy and vibrant political institutions that often served to slow and check popular will.

SPHIS will host the AAMC-CDC webinar “Enhancing Your Medical Career with a Public Health Experience.” This particular webinar will highlight the Epidemic Intelligence Service, a two-year post-graduate training program at the CDC, and feature two current fellows. Nationally known educator Ken Bain, PhD, author of What the Best College Teachers Do, interviewed creative, successful professionals to find out what they did as college students to help them make the most of their time in college. Bain will share his insights in a special workshop open to undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff.
