1.) McConnell Center Talk: Are two presidents better than one?

The McConnell Center’s Debating America public lecture series continues with author David Orentlicher, MD, JD, who will discuss his view that the “imperial presidency” and partisan conflict are largely the result of the Constitution’s placement of a single president atop the executive branch. Orentlicher offers a remedy: replace the one-party presidency with a two-person, two-party executive branch. Orentlicher is a constitutional law professor at Indiana University.

2.) Meet a Faculty Favorite
In UofL Today’s second installment of the top 2013-2014 Faculty Favorites nominees, meet Raymond Chastain, a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences. This week, watch this video of Professor Chastain, and look for more on the upcoming Faculty Favorites reception Feb. 6. “Working third shift is a struggle, and it may be hard to concentrate in class sometimes, but I never wanted to miss a physics class because it was the best class I had ever taken,” one student said. Another said, “Professor Chastain will be one I will never forget just because he made me want to learn, without him knowing it.”

UofL Conversations with Champions and Hall of Fame journalist Billy Reed present, A Celebration of Black History Month, featuring special guests Wade Houston, first African-American basketball player to earn a scholarship at UofL; Tim Sullivan, Courier Journal sports columnist; and Kendrick Haskins, WAVE3. 5.) Reminder: IT preventive maintenance occurs every Friday night
As the semester is now in full swing, please remember that Information Technology’s weekly preventive maintenance window is 10 p.m. –2 a.m. every Friday night. During this time period, enterprise systems (e.g. Blackboard, email, wireless, instant messaging, PeopleSoft, SharePoint, ULink, voice and data services, etc.) may be offline for required maintenance. If you choose to work during this period, please note that systems may be taken offline without notice, and you may lose work.

6.) Webinar: Working with Industry: A university perspective

As federal funds are declining and becoming more competitive, universities are working with industry more often. Industry contracts can be intimidating because they often contain complex intellectual property terms and confidentiality provisions. This webinar will explore university/industry research collaborations from both a university perspective as well as an industry perspective. Common contract issues, cultural differences and the benefits of university/industry partnerships will be addressed.

7.) PLAN workshop focuses on how to create an online portfolio for a job search
Jan. 18, 2 to 4 p.m., Ekstrom Library, Room W103
What is your web presence like? Do you have a professional online presence? If you are going out into the job market, the answer to these questions could set you apart from other applicants. This workshop will discuss why you should develop an online portfolio, what information should be included, and how even the busy or technologically challenged can build an online presence starting today. 8.) PLAN hosts workshop for GTAs on cultural identities as instructors
Jan. 27, noon to 1 p.m., Houchens Building, Room 105
The School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies (SIGS) invites graduate students to participate in a six-session series on navigating their own and their students’ diversity identities in academic settings. This particular session will focus on understanding the power differential and its implications in your classroom and reflection on your own cultural identities, assumptions and privilege. 9.) Surplus Warehouse to reopen Wednesday
The Surplus Warehouse located at 1901 S. Floyd St. on Belknap Campus will reopen Wed., January 28. Warehouse hours are 8:00 a.m.-noon and 1 – 4 p.m. Department representatives may select items for department use only. There is no charge if the department representatives remove the item(s) from Surplus. Departments may request for a fee that Physical Plant deliver the reserved items by completing the “Chargeable Service Request” form.

10.) Signature Partnership Initiative: A forum on engagement

The forum will provide an overview of the Signature Partnership Initiative highlighting how faculty are engaged through their teaching and research. Opportunities for staff, faculty and student involvement will also be explored. Light lunch will be served.
