During Body Awareness Week, the household of psychology professor Phyllis, her girlfriend Joyce and Joyce’s adult son, Jared, who may or may not have Asperger’s, is shaken to the core by visiting photographer Frank and his female nudes.     2.) You’re invited to the Kentucky Women’s Book Festival

    May 17, 9 a.m., 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Ekstrom Library

    Free festival (optional lunch $16), open to the public

    Readers and writers will convene for the 8th Annual Kentucky Women’s Book Festival on  Saturday in the Ekstrom Library. Author presentations, book sales, signings and a luncheon will give participants a chance to connect over their pastimes: reading, writing and talking about books. Stop in and bring a friend.     On July 1, UofL will officially join the ranks of the prestigious Atlantic Coast Conference. But even though we will be the conference’s newest member, others in the UofL community have already fostered strong relationships with ACC schools and we want to hear your story.     4.) Expanded shuttle route starts May 29 on HSC

    Beginning May 29

    Effective May 29, University Parking and Transportation will begin operating an expanded shuttle route on the Health Science Campus to include Nucleus and the Jewish Hospital Garage on Muhammad Ali Blvd. The new stops will add 5 minutes to the current route time.  A map of the new shuttle route can be found at this link.

    6.) Geriatrics accepting nominations for Gold Standard Award

    Do you know someone age 85 or older, making the most of their later years, continuing to love life and, despite constraints, continuing to engage? UofL Geriatrics is accepting nominations for an individual and a couple for the Gold Standard Award for Optimal Aging. Nominations may be made online here. The award will be presented Sept. 23 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 830 Phillips Lane.

    7.) 2014-15 Paul Weber Award information sessions scheduled

    May 23, 9 to 10 a.m. or June 9, 2 to 3 p.m.,  Delphi Center (2nd floor, Ekstrom Library)

    Register to attend an informal information session to learn more about the application process and submission timeline for the 2014-2015 Paul Weber Award for Department Excellence in Teaching. The award seeks to foster and sustain a university-wide culture of teaching excellence by recognizing departments that demonstrate best practices in teaching and learning. Stage one applications are due August 15.

    8.) Space engineering camp offered for grades 7 to 9

    June 16 to 20, Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium

    $180 UofL affiliates/$150 family members

    The planetarium’s Space Engineering Camp grades 7 to 9 is just the thing to keep kids engaged in learning. Hands-on activities such as building constellations, designing a space outpost, having solar car races, making rockets and using probes and other technology make this an exciting camp for teenagers.

    9.) Department of Surgery’s Samuel Gross Lectureship is Friday

    May 16, 7 to 8 a.m., Health Sciences Center Auditorium, 500 S. Preston St., in the Commons Building of the Health Sciences Center

    The 2014 Samuel Gross lecturer will be Steven C. Stain, MD, professor and chairman, department of surgery, Albany Medical College, Albany, N.Y. His lecture is titled, “Is Informed Consent an Oxymoron?”

    10.) Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology Seminar features Dr. Andrew Judge

    11.) Pediatric Grand Rounds presents Dr. Kenneth R. Cooke

    May 16, 8 a.m., Norton Hospital, 2nd Floor Auditorium

    Please join us for the 12th Annual Dunbar Lectureship. Kenneth R. Cooke, MD, will be presenting “Pulmonary Complications after Blood Stem Cell Transplantation.” Cooke is the director of the pediatric blood and marrow transplantation program at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

    12.) Family and Geriatric Medicine presents various topics

    This Grand Rounds will feature scholarly project presentations by four family medicine graduating residents covering a broad range of primary care topics: Jing Bryant, MD; David Gilbert, MD; Iosbani Morales, MD; and Amy Kim, MD.     13.) Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health presents uterine fibroids discussion

    Charles E. Miller, MD, will present Minimally Invasive Treatment of Uterine Fibroids. Dr. Miller is the founder, president and medical director of Charles E. Miller, MD, & Associates–Specialists in Reproductive Health. He will discuss differences between GnRH agonist and GnRH antagonist. Dr. Miller will explain the technique of Magnetic Resonance-Guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery and also the risks of Uterine Artery Embolization on ovarian reserve.
