Shiping Hua, PhD, Calvin and Helen Lang Distinguished Chair in Asian Studies, director of UofL’s Asian Studies program and political science professor, is leading a group of eight McConnell Scholars on a month-long immersion trip in China. This is the 10th year he has taken the trip with McConnell Scholars. For updates and great pictures, follow their trip on the McConnell Center blog here.

1.) Few openings remain to attend Delphi U Online summer 2015

Free
A few spots remain for the summer offering of Delphi U Online. The next offering of an eight-week online course to prepare instructors to teach online will launch on June 15 and conclude on August 9. Over the eight weeks participants will learn two primary concepts: first, what it is like to be an online learner, and second, how to effectively teach online. This course is made up of eight separate modules that are covered one week at a time.

2.) Spam filtering of outgoing email to begin
Spam filtering of outgoing email will be implemented on Friday, May 29. This enhancement is to prevent external email systems from dropping email without notification to the sender or intended recipient. This new system will capture identified email as spam due to language, content or file size and bounce the email back to the sender. To avoid dropped messages, keep the subject line and body content professional, and email signatures simple and free of multiple URLs and large graphics.

3.) Lunchtime cycling supports National Bike Challenge and Ky BikeMS ride
Information Technology, in support of the National Bike Challenge and to bring awareness to the June KY BikeMS ride, is organizing two lunchtime rides for the UofL community. IT invites cyclists for a lunchtime ride from UofL to Iroquois Park on June 3 and 10. We will gather at the north entrance to the Miller IT Center at 11:30 and leave promptly at 11:45 for about an hour ride. All riders are welcome for the 15 miles, including the Iroquois hill. Helmets required.

4.) Upcoming Program: Keeping the PEACC

Members of the campus community are encouraged to say something if we see something concerning, yet we know that can be easier said than done. The PEACC (Prevention Education Advocacy on Campus and in the Community) Center offers some practical solutions to these situations. We specialize in manageable “Green Dots” that staff and faculty can do to make a big difference in violence prevention on our campus. Join us to learn more about how you can contribute to a campus free from violence.

5.) Educator Grand Rounds and Community Forum focus on transgender health care
Educator Grand Rounds: June 11, noon to 1 p.m., School of Medicine Instructional Building Room 215
Educator Grand Rounds presents: An Interprofessional Panel Presentation on Best Practices in Transgender Health Care. A stellar panel of local health professionals and community members will lead this Medical Education Grand Rounds in a solution-focused examination of two case studies related to transgender health care. Panelists, including a member from the transgender community, will share best practices in working with transgender patients from each of these professional positions: primary care, endocrinology, nursing, and mental health (psychology).

7.) Autism study for children 4 to 10 years old

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate how a medication treats abnormal EEG’s without seizures, as well as behavioral and neurological symptoms, in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). If a child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will receive the study medication or placebo and study-related care at no cost. Parents will be offered compensation for time/travel.

Medicine Grand Rounds features Brad H. Rovin, MD, professor of medicine and pathology, and director, division of mephrology at The Ohio State University. Dr. Rovin will present, The Management of Lupus Nephritis in 2015: A Nephrologist’s Perspective, focusing on the evaluation of the SLE patient for lupus nephritis, application of the kidney biopsy in the management of lupus nephritis, and considerations in choosing immunosuppressive therapies.
