UofL has a Center for Geographic Information Sciences that provides instruction in geospatial technologies. On Wednesday, the center is celebrating its fifth annual GIS Day with presentations, a map gallery and drone demonstrations. Locations are the Shumaker Research Building and Lutz Hall beginning at 10:30 a.m.

1.) Hurry! Just a few spots left for Holiday Shopping Tour
Dec. 4, 8 a.m. start, meet at University Club
$35
UofL and the Louisville Independent Business Alliance (LIBA) will take shoppers on a Dec. 4 whirlwind tour of local shops and restaurants on the fifth annual Holiday Cards Buy Local Shopping Tour of locally owned businesses in several Louisville neighborhoods. The $35 registration fee includes opening and closing receptions, door prizes and transportation to more than a dozen shops on East Market Street (NULU), Fourth Street, Frankfort Avenue, Butchertown and St. Matthews.

2.) College of Business kicks off the Elevate Portland Elementary Initiative
The College of Business is launching a new community outreach effort, the Elevate Portland Elementary Initiative, beginning with Nov. 20 kickoff event at 2 p.m. at Portland Elementary. The Portland neighborhood is one of the poorest in Louisville and the majority of the children in this school live below the poverty line. The initiative is designed to provide the students with basic needs that support a higher quality learning environment and to nurture aspirational goals that will encourage a path out of poverty. The first project will provide each student with a sweatshirt that will not only keep them warm during the cold winter months, but also include their target high school graduation date as an inspirational reminder.

7.) Bach Goes to Hollywood: The Use of His Music in Motion Pictures
Nov. 19, 7 p.m., Bird Recital Hall, School of Music
Russell Stinson, the 2015 Gerhard Herz Visiting Professor of Bach Studies at UofL, will give a lecture at 7 p.m., Nov. 19, on Johann Sebastian Bach’s music in motion pictures. The lecture will particularly focus on Bach-infused scenes from three of the most famous films of the 20th century: “The Godfather,” “Silence of the Lambs,” and “Schindler’s List,” addressing them from a variety of cinematic, cultural, musical and political perspectives.
