    1.) Benefits Tip: Today is the last day for HSC Benefits Fair

    Oct. 21, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., CTRB

    Meet with a benefit vendor and your benefits team for one-on-one consultation. Mark your calendars, your next benefit fairs will be located at Get Healthy Now Wellness Center, 601 Presidents Blvd., Oct. 27-28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Go to the Open Enrollment website for more information and make your elections.     2.) Annual Corn Island Storytelling Festival is Friday at UofL

    Oct. 23, 6 to 10 p.m., Lutz Hall Lawn

    Free

    UofL, Blackacre Historic Homestead and the International Order of E.A.R.S. present the Corn Island Storytelling Festival Oct. 23-24. The Oct. 23 date is at UofL and is free and open to the public. A fall festival for children runs 6 to 7:30 p.m. with crafts, games and a native American drum circle. Storytelling begins at 7 p.m. Concessions will be available for purchase from Boss Hog’s BBQ. Sponsors include Fifth Third, Louisville Metro Government, Vice Provost for Diversity and International Affairs and Kentucky Homefront.

    3.) Trick or Treat with the Greeks

    Free

    The fraternity and sorority life community is hosting a safe and fun trick or treating extravaganza for the children of faculty, staff, and students. There will be fun games, delicious treats, and trick-or-treating along Greek Row!

    4.) Ulmer Career Center to host Business Career Fair on Friday

    Oct. 23, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Crown Plaza Hotel

    Local, regional and national career opportunities are on the horizon as UofL’s Ulmer Career Center presents its Fall 2015 Business Career Fair. Nearly 100 employers in multiple fields will be in attendance, looking for fresh talent to help their businesses. The event is open to students, faculty, staff and alumni looking for a part-time job, internship or a full-time position in business. The hotel will provide free parking and there will be a shuttle bus available to take those interested from the COB to the Crowne Plaza every 15 minutes.

    Sustainability Week

    5.) It’s Campus Sustainability Day!

    Kick it all off with the Reuse Roundtable 9-11:30am (Ekstrom, Chao), then head outside to the Campus Sustainability Day fair on the Quad 10am-2pm. Free bike tune-ups and fair trade coffee/tea with reusable mug. Recycle papers, disks and videos with Shred-It outside College of Business. End the day at the 3pm Garden Commons Workshop. Sustainability Week continues Thurs. with the Gray St. Farmers’ Market 10:30-2, a 12:30 Recycling Center Tour, Free Store 1-3pm and HSC Bike Maintenance Workshop 4-6pm.

    6.) Save the Date: Ghostbust calories with our Halloween InCycle class

    Free for all GHN members

    Join our exclusive Halloween-themed InCycle class instructed by our certified spin instructor, Andree Mondor. Jump on a bike and start peddling away from scary zombies and ghosts! Experience a thrilling intensity that’s right for you by giving/getting great energy from the class setting. This class will provide a great cardio workout that will lead you through a challenging series of courses to “ghostbust” those calories. All fitness levels and appropriate Halloween costumes welcome.

    Doug Thoroughman, PhD, MS, will present on the array of career options available to epidemiologists and other public health professionals, including local and state health department positions, federal agencies such as the CDC, and international organizations. He will offer career guidance, as well as discuss various possibilities such as the US Peace Corps, the Epidemic Intelligence Service, the Career Epidemiology Field Officer Program, Service at the CDC, and the US Public Health Service.

    11.) Conference: Milton Rogovin and the Photography of Conscience

    Oct. 23, 8:30 a.m. to noon, Hite Art Gallery, Schneider Hall

    Free

    The photography of Milton Rogovin (1910-2011) chronicled the lives of working class people. His work will be discussed by keynote speaker and oral history expert Michael Frisch. UofL faculty Christopher Fulton, Joy Carew, Chris Reitz and Catherine Fosl will then discuss Rogovin’s photography from the perspective of their disciplines. Additional commentary will be offered by independent photography historian, Steven. W. Plattner. Rogovin’s photography will be on view in the gallery.

    12.) Women Veterans Brown Bag Lunch & Learn Workshop Series

    All military veterans, including student-veterans, active duty, reservist, National Guard or military families and widows are invited to the Women Veterans Brown Bag Lunch & Learn Workshop Series, which will focus on Veteran Women, Employment & Entrepreneurship.     Medicine Grand Rounds features Jerry Yu, PhD, professor of medicine in the UofL Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Disorders Medicine. Dr. Yu will present The Vagus Nerve in Health and Disease, focusing on reviewing the role of the vagus nerve in body function, discussing neuro-immune interaction, and ways the nervous system and immune system interact, and ways in which the autonomic nervous system is not only important during normal condition but also disease condition.

    16.) Healthy blood donors needed for study #96.0191

    Baxter I Building lab 117

    Donors are needed for research studies of the function of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell responsible for destroying bacteria) and how diseases affect this function. Donors must be healthy, at least 18 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be medication free. Amount of blood drawn will vary anywhere from 50mls to 450mls and $30 per 100 ml (or part thereof) up to a maximum of $120 will be paid.

    Additional Information: Blood donation is performed in the morning at the Nephrology research laboratories of Kenneth McLeish, MD, located in the Donald E Baxter Research Building and takes approximately 20 minutes.
