    UofL’s LGBT Center created 150 street outreach packs for the Lost-n-Found Youth Center in Atlanta last weekend as a service project prior to the football game against Auburn. UofL President James Ramsey also stopped by Lost-n-Found to celebrate the donation. Check out the photos here.

    1.) Pick up your Grawemeyer Spirit Award tickets

    If you reserved tickets for the Sept. 17 Grawemeyer Spirit Award event honoring Muhammad Ali, you must pick up your tickets by 5 p.m. tomorrow, September 11.  If you reserved tickets for pickup at Belknap Campus, go to the West Information Center (in front of Grawemeyer Hall) and provide a photo ID.  If you reserved tickets for pickup at the Health Sciences Center Campus, go to the UofL Abell Administration Center, Office of the Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, 3rd floor. Due to high interest in this event, if you do not pick up your tickets by SEPTEMBER 11 at 5 p.m., your tickets will be released.  NO EXCEPTIONS. 

    If you did not reserve tickets, but are interested in attending the Sept. 17 event, which begins at 11 a.m. at The Louisville Palace, please join the wait list to be notified if tickets become available.  For more information about the Grawemeyer Awards’ 30th Anniversary celebration, go to grawemeyer.org.

     

    2.) October events in Old Louisville

    ·       St. James Court Art Show October 2-4, 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. (Friday and Saturday) 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Sunday); 750 juried artists.

    ·       The Garvin Gate Blues Festival October 9-10 6:30 p.m.- 11 p.m. (Friday) 2:00 p.m. -11 p.m. (Saturday); Free music street festival on Oak Street between 4th and 6th streets near Garvin Place.  2015 is a Tribute to Chicago Blues and Muddy Waters.

    ·       The Victorian Tales of Terror is a new outdoor theater/tour in Old Louisville which runs October 15-18, 7 to 9 p.m. nightly with tours departing every 10 minutes from the Historic Old Louisville Neighborhood and Visitors Center in Central Park. Tickets are $20 in advance, call to reserve your tour time 502-635-5244. Or $25 day of show.

    3.) Gray Street: Red and yellow watermelon

    Thursdays through Oct. 29, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., 400 block of E. Gray St.

    Some items available today will include: red and yellow watermelons, heirloom tomatoes, whole grain breads, blueberry-lavender lemon glaze scones, small sweet cantaloupe, corn, tomatoes, squash, zucchini, beets, cabbage, onions, cucumbers, okra, bell peppers, hot peppers, green beans, apples, cut flowers, lettuce, potatoes, peaches, apple chips, kettle corn and homemade soaps and lotions. The University of Kentucky’s Cooperative Extension Service Nutrition Education Program will be at the market. The goal of the program is to empower families with limited resources to make healthy life choices through helping plan nutritious meals on a limited budget, offer healthy cooking workshops and much more. Stop by their booth for recipes, nutritional information and samples of watermelon salad! Also Louisville Pure Tap will be on hand. Lunch trucks: Sweet ‘N Savory and V Grits.

    4.) Belknap: The last of the peaches

    Thursdays through Oct. 15, 3:30 to 6 p.m., 3rd and Brandeis next to the Ville Grill.

    Some items available today will include: Peaches, Asian pears, apples, corn, green beans, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, onions, purple hull peas, apple chips, apple butter, lamb sausage, chicken, pork, eggs, homemade breads and baked goods, honey, popcorn and lemon shake-ups. Also, toxin-free home and personal-use products, homemade wood products (reclaimed wood items), annual plants, garden accessories and markers. Nutrition Navigators will be on hand with samples of polenta pizzas from Chef Matt.     5.) Fall test of UofL Alert system today      

    The university will be conducting the fall test the UofL Alert system today at 10 a.m. This test will include the RAVE text and email alert, Informacast VOIP phones and outdoor warning speakers. If you have any questions, please contact Dennis Sullivan.

    6.) Art as Memory: A film about disability, art and identity

    In partnership with UofL’s Commission on Diversity and Racial Equality, Weber Gallery is pleased to announce the debut screening of the documentary film “Art as Memory: Suffering, Redemption, Liberation.” The film was created by a team of UofL graduate students led by Dr. Brenda Brueggemann.

    Kick start your weekend with a healthy happy hour routine. Join GHN for an interval training class that incorporates cardio, kickboxing and sculpting moves using weights.     9.) Title IX Mandatory Reporter Training next month

    Are you aware that as a UofL employee, you are likely a mandatory Title IX reporter? Do you understand the responsibilities and requirements included in this role? There are two federal laws, Title IX and the Clery Act, that establish responsibilities for employees of universities to report certain types of crimes and incidents, especially sexual misconduct. To learn more about these laws, including the reporting requirements of “responsible employees,” and how to report, please register.

    14.) Research!Louisville Greenberg and L-WIMS Awards: Call for Abstracts

    The Greenberg Award for Medical Education Research is open to researchers at all levels who submit studies that investigate methods and outcomes related to teaching and learning for healthcare learners or patients. The Louisville Women in Medicine and Science (L-WIMS) Award this new award is open to women researchers at all levels who submit studies that investigate clinical or behavioral issues related to female healthcare learners or female patients.

    17.) Paid volunteers for UofL Caregiver Stress Study

    Make a quick $20! UofL Caregiver Stress Study is looking for healthy European American, 40 years and older who have NOT provided care for an ill friend or family member in the last year to fill out a questionnaire and provide saliva samples for up to 3 different time points. Each visit takes approximately 1 hour. We are offering $20 compensation for each visit.

    Hiram Rivas Perez, MD, UofL Pulmonary Critical Care Division, will present A Personalized Medicine Approach for the Diagnosis & Management of COPD. He will discuss the patho-physiology of COPD, and give an overview at diagnosis of COPD. Rivas Perez will discuss management of stable COPD and also the diagnosis and management of COPD exacerbation.     This Friday, please join us for a pediatric grand rounds featuring Tania Condurache, MD. Condurache is an associate professor of pediatrics at UofL. She will be presenting “Global Health in Our Backyard and Abroad.” After the presentation, the attendees should be able to describe opportunities for global health education in our department and describe partnerships developed and nurtured by the department of pediatrics.
