    Grawemeyer Spirit Award

    1.) Grawemeyer Spirit Award today

    11 a.m., Louisville Palace

    Event will be livestreamed on WHAS-TV and WDRB-TV

    UofL will pay tribute to Muhammad Ali in a public ceremony today as the legendary boxer and humanitarian receives the inaugural Grawemeyer Spirit Award. The prize marks the 30th anniversary of the Grawemeyer Awards. The Grawemeyer Spirit Award ceremony kicks off a series of events, including lectures by Grawemeyer Award recipients. The event will be livestreamed on WHAS-TV and WDRB-TV.

    2.) Gray Street: No bake chocolate cookies

    Thursdays through Oct. 29, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., 400 block of E. Gray St.

    Some items available today will include: red and yellow watermelons, tomato pies, no bake chocolate cookies, pickled watermelon rinds, whole grain breads, jams, corn, tomatoes, squash, zucchini, beets, cabbage, onions, cucumbers, okra, bell peppers, hot peppers, green beans, apples, cut flowers, lettuce, potatoes, peaches, apple chips, kettle corn and homemade soaps and lotions. UofL’s Get Healthy Now program will be on hand at 12:30 p.m. for a Take 20 session: “Cook Once-Eat Twice.” Also Louisville Pure Tap will be on hand. Lunch trucks: Holy Mole and Boss Hog’s BBQ.

    3.) Belknap: Asian pears

    Thursdays through Oct. 15, 3:30 to 6 p.m., 3rd and Brandeis next to the Ville Grill.

    Some items available today will include: Asian pears, apples, corn, green beans, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, onions, purple hull peas, apple chips, apple butter, lamb sausage, chicken, pork, eggs, homemade breads and baked goods, honey, popcorn and lemon shake-ups.     4.) 7th Annual Community Engagement Awards Ceremony & Reception

    The university community is invited to attend a ceremony and reception honoring the 2015 recipients of the Community Engagement Award. This award recognizes students, staff, faculty and community partners who are involved in outstanding community engagement service. This year also honors two individuals for their lifetime achievement of service to UofL and the community.

    Get in and out fast! Get a flu shot and a treat too! Flu shots are free to students, faculty, and staff ($5 for retirees).     7.) School of Medicine Basic, Bridge, & Collaborative Grant Programs

    The School of Medicine Research Committee administers the Basic, Bridge, and Collaborative Matching Grant programs to provide financial support to School of Medicine faculty. These awards have been increased up to $25K for Basic, $40K for Bridge, and $50K for Collaborative with $25K in matched funds. The next cycle’s submission deadline is October 1, 2015.

    Fewer than 10 percent of kids from low-income communities graduate from college. Teach For America is looking for leaders of all backgrounds, academic majors, and career interests who are committed to eliminating this inequity, which limits the opportunities of kids, families, and communities.

    11.) Soup for Support and Bake Sale to benefit American Heart Association

    The UofL Department of Pediatrics is hosting a Chili & Soup fundraiser to raise money for the American Heart Association. $5 or more donation gets you a bowl of soup or chili and all the fixin’s. Bake sale items for additional fee.

    The Fall 2015 Samuel Cheng, MD, Lecture in Humanities in Medicine, will host visiting professor, Nancy Elder, M.D. Dr. Elder is the professor and director of research at the University of Cincinnati’s Department of Family & Community Medicine. She will present how to approach the situation of making a mistake, and/or observing another physician, resident, or student make a mistake. Sponsored by UL Family & Geriatric Medicine.     This Friday, please join us for a pediatric grand rounds featuring Kerry Caperell, MD. Caperell is an assistant professor of pediatrics and the director of ED asthma care at the University of Louisville. He will be presenting “Management of Status Asthmaticus: Past, Present, and Future.” After the presentation, the attendees should be able to define the condition of status asthmaticus, its epidemiology and its potential complications.
