For the first time in school history, UofL had a full team qualify for the National Championship of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). The UofL Western Equestrian Team tied for second at the IHSA semi-finals in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, last weekend and head to Nationals at the Kentucky Horse Park on May 5-8.

3.) Surplus Warehouse closing Thursday for auction preparations
April 7
The Surplus Warehouse will close on Thursday, April 7, to prepare for the upcoming auction scheduled for Saturday, April 30. The initial auction list is posted on the Surplus website. The Surplus Warehouse will be open for viewing and reserving surplus items for department use on Wednesday, April 6, 8 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. All reserved items should be removed as soon as possible. The Surplus Warehouse is located at 1901 S. Floyd St. on Belknap Campus.

4.) Celebrate Money Smart Week at your library
April 4 and 5, 1-4 p.m., Ekstrom’s East Wing on the first floor
Ekstrom Library and UofL’s preferred credit union, the Commonwealth Credit Union, have partnered to have presentations about Identify Theft, Ways to Supplement Your Retirement, and you can also sign-up for a free Credit Report Review and Financial Counseling. UofL Students can play to win a grand prize $500, second place $300, and third place $200 by participating in Finding Money for College Student Scavenger Hunt.

5.) Official Launch: Black Freedom, White Allies, Red Scare: Louisville, 1954

On behalf of UofL’s Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research, we are excited to announce that the digitization of our public history exhibit is officially complete. The original exhibit in the downtown public library could never have happened without the involvement and support of our campus and community partners. The launch date is also the exact 9-year anniversary of the Institute’s grand opening.

The annual show for faculty and staff is scheduled for June 13 to June 30 in the Photographic Archives gallery at Ekstrom Library. The exhibit is an opportunity for UofL employees who are not professional or exhibited artists to share their work. 8.) New York Times bestseller Jay Winik to discuss ‘1944’

Jay Winik, PhD, one of the nation’s leading historians, will be the final speaker in the McConnell Center’s spring lecture series on “Citizens & Statesmen.” His talk will consider his bestseller, ‘1944: FDR and the Year that Changed History.’ Winik’s books are widely read by world leaders, including former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. A book signing and reception will be held after the talk.

9.) Dr. Monteiro to discuss ‘The Revolutionary Example of Paul Robeson’
April 6, 7 p.m., Ekstrom Library, Chao Auditorium
Free, public
Focusing on the revolutionary legacy of Paul Robeson, Dr. Monteiro considers biographical, social scientific, and philosophical sources to demonstrate Robeson’s unique intellect and to suggest the multiple threads of black existence that produced it. The ideas Robeson championed are once again becoming concrete in today’s struggles against police terror and mass incarceration. Robeson stands as a fighter against white supremacy and imperialism, providing an example for today’s youth.

Teaching philosophy statements offer an opportunity for self-reflection, provide a means of communication with one’s students, and are increasingly a requirement in academic job applications. This workshop will allow you the opportunity to reflect upon your philosophical approach to teaching and learning by comparing and responding to sample teaching philosophy statements.
