    Did You Know?

    Two UofL professors have been selected to be a part of the Leadership Louisville Class of 2017: Lars Smith, from the Brandeis School of Law, and Faye Jones, MD, from the School of Medicine. There are 60 members in the program, which “brings together established leaders in the community who want to better understand the people and issues driving Louisville’s future.”

    1.) Poster session of summer undergraduate research scheduled

    Aug. 3, noon to 3 p.m., Kosair Charities, CTRB Lobby, HSC

    Undergraduate students will present the results from their 10-week summer research experience. Participants in the Cancer Education R25, IMPACT REU, KBRIN, Physiology Cardiovascular, SROP, Cancer Center High School students, and students supported by External Fellowship, will present.

    2.) PLAN hosts workshop on effective teaching using technology

    July 28, 1-2 p.m., Room W102, Ekstrom Library, Belknap Campus

    Are you a GTA wanting to learn ways to use technology effectively in your classes? This workshop is designed to help GTAs learn about, choose, and integrate classroom technologies that will help them teach more effectively and will provide participants with an understanding of how using various tech platforms can enhance students’ knowledge of research skills, group collaboration, and in-class discussion.

    3.) Participants needed for blood draw study

    IRB # 15.0856; Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 a.m., HSC campus

    UofL and the American Heart Association Tobacco Research and Addiction Center (A-TRAC) are conducting a study that will use blood to study the effects of flavoring added to both tobacco products and e-cigarettes. The study is recruiting healthy, unmedicated adults (18-40 years of age) who have never used tobacco. The study will be one visit that will last approximately 30 minutes and a one-time blood draw of less than 2 tablespoons. Participant compensation will be $30 as a Swift pre-paid card.

    4.) HSC KORU Mindfulness & Meditation available

    Four sessions: Aug. 4, Aug. 11, Aug. 18 and Aug. 25, noon to 1:15 p.m., Room K2002, Nursing School K Building, Health Sciences Center; Free for employees, spouses and QAs

    Beyond simply decreasing your stress, this evidence-based KORU workshop will help you learn skills to find more satisfaction in your daily life. The course is designed to help you learn mindfulness through the practice of specific skills that calm and focus your mind and through the practice of meditation. If you are feeling pressured and stressed, or are just interested in learning a new skill that can enrich your life, these classes are for you. Beginners and experienced meditators welcome.

    Alicia Kelso is the director of social media and digital content. She joined UofL in 2015 as director of communications at the Brandeis School of Law.
