    Did You Know?

    Last week, UofL launched its first endowed scholarship fund for Latino and Hispanic students. The Al Dia en America Endowed Scholarship is offered through the Office of Hispanic and Latino Initiatives. It was established by Jose Neil Donis, publisher of Al Dia en America, Louisville’s Spanish newspaper.

    1.) WHAS-TV, Great Day Live

    Mondays at 9:30 a.m. UofL’s Mark Hebert has a story about UofL and talks with Rachel Platt and Terry Meiners about campus events. Segments can be found on YouTube. WLKY-TV also runs the UofL stories on their Saturday morning newscasts.

    4.) Fencing goes up around SAC today to prepare for construction

    On Monday, September 19, fencing will go up around the Student Service Annex in preparation for demolish of the Student Service Annex and construction of an addition to the SAC. The short-term metered parking south of the Annex and the parking lot north of the Houchens building will be closed throughout the construction.

    5.) Distinguished faculty to be recognized Tuesday night

    Acting President Neville Pinto and Acting Provost Dale Billingsley will recognize dozens of outstanding faculty at the 2016 Celebration of Faculty Excellence Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the Brown and Williamson Club. The 6 p.m. event is open to the university community. The awards program recognizes distinguished faculty in categories including teaching; scholarship, research and creative activity; service; multicultural teaching; community engagement and others. In addition, new endowed faculty and holders of patents and licenses will be recognized. The winners’ names will be published Wednesday on UofLNews.com.

     

    6.) Surplus Warehouse hosting public auction

    October 1, doors open at 8 a.m., auction starts at 9:30 a.m.

    The Surplus Warehouse, located at 1901 S. Floyd St. on Belknap Campus, will hold a public auction October 1. The warehouse will be open for preview on September 30, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The list of auction items is available on the Surplus website under “Auction List.”

    7.) The PEACC Center relocates to the SAC

    All are invited to attend the fall edition of UofL’s Trifecta Translational Training Program for Life Science Technologies.     14.) PLAN hosting workshop on formatting and submitting dissertation or thesis

    September 22, 3-4 p.m., Room 2022, K-Wing (Nursing), on HSC campus

    This workshop is for students writing (or anticipating writing) a dissertation, thesis, or a similar project for which a copy will need to be submitted to the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies.     This workshop will focus on the distinctive demands of reading and responding to writing for graduate-level courses and research. We will cover concepts that can help you navigate your way through scholarly work, identify strategies for reading and responding to difficult scholarly texts, and understand professors’ expectations for how grad students are expected to use the scholarship.     17.) School of Medicine grant program submission deadline set

    October 1

    The School of Medicine Research Committee administers the Basic, Bridge, and Collaborative Matching Grant programs to provide financial support to School of Medicine faculty. These awards have been increased up to $25K for Basic, $40K for Bridge, and $50K for Collaborative with $25K in matched funds. The next cycle’s submission deadline is October 1.

    18.) New Information Technology Service Catalog coming

    Information Technology will release a new IT Service Catalog on October 3. This Catalog will allow IT customers to request a variety of services or direct questions to the HelpDesk. All service request forms will be easily identifiable by category and the catalog will provide tracking tools allowing customers to know the status of their requests.

    19.) Treated or untreated hypertension in children 6 to less than 18 years old

    IRB# 14.1112

    The Kosair Children’s Pediatric Clinical Research Unit (KCPCRU) is conducting a clinical trial looking at the safety and effectiveness of a potential new medicine to treat high blood pressure in children 6 to less than 18 years of age. Eligible participants may be currently treated or untreated for hypertension and will be closely followed by UofL physicians throughout the study. Participants will be compensated for their time and travel.

    20.) Childhood obesity in children 10 to less than 14 years old

    IRB #13.0334

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a research study to evaluate the effect of an investigational product on childhood obesity. White and African American male and female subjects 10 to less than 14 years old who are overweight, obese or normal weight may be eligible. If a child qualifies to participate, he or she will receive the product or placebo and study related care at no cost. Compensation will be provided for time/travel.

    21.) Participants needed for blood draw study

    IRB # 15.0856; Appointment times are Wednesdays and Fridays, 9:30 a.m., and the study is ongoing

    UofL’s School of Medicine and the American Heart Association Tobacco Regulation and Addiction Center (A-TRAC) are conducting a study that will use blood to study the effects of flavoring added to both tobacco products and e-cigarettes. We will do a one-time blood draw of less than 2 tablespoons. The study is recruiting healthy unmedicated young adults (18-40 years of age) who have never used tobacco. The study will be one visit that will last approximately 30 minutes.  Participant compensation will be $30 as a Swift pre-paid card.
