    Kentucky’s population is projected to grow more than 10 percent by 2040 although 66 percent of its counties are expected to decline in population, according to new projections issued by the Kentucky State Data Center at the University of Louisville.

    Jeff C. Falcone, PhD, associate professor of Physiology in the School of Medicine, will receive the Faculty Engagement Award at tonight’s Community Engagement Awards Ceremony. Falcone has helped launch more than 800 students into various health-related fields serving as program director of the Summer Medical and Dental Educaton Program.

    Power outages scheduled for Belknap Academic Classroom Building project

    October 30
    The demolition of Crawford gym and construction of the new Belknap Academic Classroom building requires two electrical shutdowns that will impact several buildings.
    On Oct. 30 at 5:30 a.m., a power outage will affect the Service Complex, Houchens, Thrust Theatre, Floyd Street Garage and the Natatorium until approximately 6:30 p.m.; Two 30-minute power outages will also impact 12 other buildings Oct. 30, from 5:30-6 a.m. and 6-6:30 p.m. The buildings include Davidson, Baptist/Interfaith Centers, Stevenson, Shumaker, Threkeld, SAC, Red Barn, Honors Program and the elevators in Jouett, Gottschalk and Ford.

     

    UofL Dining Services opens food truck on HSC campus

    UofL Dining Services opened its first food truck on the HSC campus. This food truck sits on top on the patio of the quad in front of the Instructional Building. The UofL Food Truck is operating Monday-Friday with breakfast service from 7:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. and lunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. With the addition of this new dining location, the POD in Kornhnauser closed last week. Construction on the new Starbucks and Au Bon Pain is going well as both are expected to open before the end of the year.

    Campus visit of Cuban-American author, Dr. Gustavo Pérez Firmat

    October 27
    Dr. Gustavo Pérez Firmat will present the 15th Annual Latin American and Latino Studies Heritage Lecture, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Exoticism and the Aesthetics of Diversity” Oct. 27, 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Elaine Chao Auditorium. Earlier that day, he will also host a poetry reading in English, Spanish, and Spanglish from 11 a.m. to noon in Shumaker Research Building Room 139.     ‘On the Value of Boredom, Andreas Elpidorou, Philosophy

    October 27, 2:30p.m., Humanities Bldg. room 300

    By presenting and synthesizing findings on the character of boredom, its relationship to self-regulation, and the role of emotions in well-being, Professor Elpidorou advances a novel theoretical account of the function of the state of boredom and argues for boredom’s significance and importance in our everyday lives. Elpidorou is a 2016-17 CCHS Faculty Fellow specializing in the philosophical study of the mind and the character of consciousness, cognition, and emotions.

    Bioengineering Department Seminar Series

    Oct. 27, noon to 1:30 p.m., Vogt Building, Room 311
    Dr. Marcin Wysoczynski, assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at UofL, will present “Innate Immunity in Heart Repair.” Recent findings implicate macrophages as direct contributors to cell therapy-mediated myocardial repair. Nevertheless, it remains largely unknown how immune cells regulate myocardial repair and what determines their harmful versus salutary actions. The main goal is to understand how immune system contributes to repair of post-MI hearts.
