    DID YOU KNOW

    The University of Louisville Family Business Center at the College of Business was originally established in 1993. It was re-launched in 2009 to offer more opportunities for family-owned firms to learn from peers, business leaders and industry experts. The center will present its third annual Brown-Forman Family Business Leadership Award Nov. 9. 

     

    FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES

    University of Louisville School of Nursing Professor Marianne Hutti, PhD, APRN, was recently honored by Presentation Academy at the 21st annual Tower Awards dinner. Hutti, coordinator of the School of Nursing’s women’s health-family nurse practitioner dual major program, was recognized as a leader in education.

    The University Libraries now offer online access to the full text of the Chronicle of Higher Education, one of the leading sources of information about academic affairs. The Chronicle is fully searchable from 1989 to the present. To access our subscription, use the library catalog or search box on your library’s homepage and search for Chronicle of Higher Education.

    ULPD offers tips to prevent car break-ins, bicycle thefts

    The UofL Police Department has received numerous reports of vehicle break-ins and bicycle thefts on and around Belknap Campus. The following are crime prevention tips to help prevent you from becoming a victim of a theft:

    • Always lock your vehicle
    • Don’t leave the keys in the vehicle
    • Don’t leave your vehicle’s engine running
    • Don’t leave items in view in your vehicle on campus or shopping
    • Store items left in the vehicle in the trunk
    • Lock your bicycle with good lock such as a “U” lock (cable locks are easily cut)
    • Always maintain control of your purse, wallet, backpack, laptop, cell phone and your credit card

    English as a Second Language Teaching Endorsement now offered online

    The English as a Second Language endorsement at UofL is now available 100 percent online. This program, developed by the College of Education faculty, prepares Kentucky certified teachers to meet the needs of the growing English language learner community in our state. The curriculum focuses on sociolinguistics, cross-cultural competency, and the importance of making connections between linguistic theory and classroom practice.

    CODRE, Office of Research & Innovation offer diversity grant for minority undergraduate students

    Submission deadline is Nov. 21

    The Commission on Diversity and Racial Equality (CODRE) and Office of Research & Innovation Offer Diversity Grant for Minority Undergraduate Students offer diversity grants for minority undergraduate students conducting research in the areas of science, technology, engineering and/or math.     FLSA training for supervisors of non-exempt employees

    Training sessions have been scheduled for supervisors of impacted employees transitioning to non-exempt on December 1, 2016, due to the updated FLSA overtime rule.     The Liberal Studies Project presents lunch & lecture series ‘Meet the Professor’

    This month, Professors Walker and Hart, from the Department of Communication, will discuss youth perceptions of tobacco and views of tobacco products. Despite overwhelming evidence on the harms of tobacco consumption and some success in reducing smoking rates in the U.S., youth in Appalachia continue to use tobacco at higher rates than their peers.     University Symphony Orchestra’s Halloween Spooktacular

    Oct. 31, 8 p.m. (doors open at 7:30 p.m.), School of Music, Comstock Concert Hall 105 W. Brandeis Ave.; Free
    The University Symphony Orchestra, directed by Kimcherie Lloyd, will present this concert with Halloween-themed music. Performers will appear in costume and attendees are encouraged to wear costumes as well. Attendees are encouraged to come early to get a seat, as Spooktacular is one of most popular concerts of the year.

    Treated or untreated hypertension in children 6 to less than 18 years old

    The Kosair Children’s Pediatric Clinical Research Unit (KCPCRU) is conducting a clinical trial looking at the safety and effectiveness of a potential new medicine to treat high blood pressure in children 6-<18 years of age. Eligible participants may be currently treated or untreated for hypertension and will be closely followed by UofL physicians throughout the study. Participants will be compensated for their time and travel.

    Childhood obesity in children 10 to less than 14 years old

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a research study to evaluate the effect of an investigational product on childhood obesity. White and African American male and female subjects 10 to less than 14 years old who are overweight, obese or normal weight may be eligible. If a child qualifies to participate, he or she will receive the product or placebo and study related care at no cost. Compensation will be provided for time/travel.
