NEWS Roads to close for removal of Confederate monument Second and Third streets between Eastern Parkway and Cardinal Boulevard will be closed from 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, through at least Wednesday, Nov. 23, as crews remove the Confederate monument near Freedom Park. Louisville Metro is overseeing removal of the statue, which will be transported to Riverfront Park in Brandenburg, Ky. Mayor Greg Fischer made the decision on moving the city-owned statue after reviewing a list of recommended sites from Louisville’s Commission on Public Art. The mayor said factors included Brandenburg’s desire to use the statue in a historical context, as part of its biennial Civil War reenactment, as well as the city’s location along the Ohio River, just 44 miles from Louisville. “We are pleased that Louisville Metro and the City of Brandenburg are working to ensure a proper and fitting location for the statue,” said Acting President Neville Pinto. “While we do not wish to erase history, the University of Louisville is looking to a future that embraces and promotes diversity and inclusion for all our faculty, students and staff.” Brandenburg Mayor Ronnie Joyner said that he was delighted with Mayor Fischer’s decision and that the statue, to be located in “a very visible, very good home,” will augment tourism there associated with its commemoration of Gen. John Hunt Morgan’s raid through Brandenburg. Construction crews will begin dismantling the statue Saturday and expect to have it totally removed by Wednesday. If removal takes longer than expected, crews will return Friday, Nov. 25, and Sunday, Nov. 27, to finish the job. Both Second and Third streets will be open for traffic Saturday, Nov. 26, for the UofL-UK football game.
DID YOU KNOW During last Saturday’s football game against Wake Forest, UofL’s Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium dedicated an unoccupied chair that is to remain perpetually empty. The “Chair of Honor” pays tribute to the more than 91,000 service members who are POW and MIA since World War I, including current POWs. The chair is installed on the east terrace and is accompanied by a plaque explaining its symbolism.
FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES Cindy Shain, director of UofL’s Southern Police Institute, has been selected by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council as the 2016 recipient of the Melvin Shein Award. The Shein Award is given to a person who “has contributed the most to assist and promote law enforcement during the previous year.”
