LOUISVILLE, Ky. — What does mathematics have to offer an average person? A national math coach will speak about the practical value of mathematical reasoning during an April 13 lecture at the University of Louisville.
Carnegie Mellon University professor Po-Shen Loh will share “Creative Math Insights for the Everyday” at 6:30 p.m. in Room 112, Natural Sciences Building. His free, public talk is the annual Bullitt lecture sponsored by the UofL mathematics department in the College of Arts and Sciences.
To help popularize his subject, Loh founded a free educational technology platform called expii.com, which delivers math puzzles, personalized tutoring and math solutions to pop-culture problems via smartphones or web browsers. He uses examples ranging from “Star Wars” to self-driving cars in his interactive outreach projects designed to make math fun.
Loh works with the Mathematical Association of America as lead coach of the USA International Math Olympiad team; he is a former international silver medalist. At Carnegie Mellon, he researches combinatorics, probability and computer science.
The Bullitt family endowed the general-interest lecture series at UofL to honor former U.S. Solicitor General William Marshall Bullitt’s interest in mathematics.
