Of the more than 3,100 students on track to graduate this semester, 2,000 plan to take part in commencement Saturday. That’s about 70 more than last spring.

Professor Craig Grapperhaus (Chemistry) has been designated a Research Exemplar by The Research Exemplar Project at Washington University School of Medicine. The program defines exemplary researchers as individuals who conduct high-quality, high-impact research and demonstrate professionalism and integrity in their work. The project aims to identify the practices that exemplars use to lead and manage their research labs. Grapperhaus will be interviewed by the program in May and featured on the P.I. Program website.

Everyone is invited to a celebration for Police Chief Wayne Hall on Friday, May 12 at the University Club, in Ballrooms B & C from 3 to 4 pm. We are thanking Wayne for more than 26 years of service dedicated to the University of Louisville as the Director of Public Safety and wishing him well in his retirement. Refreshments will be served.

 

J.B. Speed School of Engineering’s Computer Science department has renamed two graduate certificates to reflect industry standards and market demand. The Graduate Certificate in Data Mining is now the Graduate Certificate in Data Science, and the Graduate Certificate in Network and Information Security is now the Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity. The certificates require 12 to 18 credit hours each and can be completed 100 percent online.

The 2017 Optimal Aging Conference, set for June 11-13, will bring together professionals, academics, older adults, community members and caregivers to explore new perspectives on aging. Continuing Education opportunities available. Register online. Six CME Category I and 7 continuing education credits/hrs for nurses, social workers, LMFT and LTCA will be offered at the Pre-Conference June 11 and 11 CME Category I and 13 continuing education credits/hrs for nurses, social workers, LMFT and LTCA at the Conference itself. Come participate in the inaugural Cardinal Sprint Triathlon. The sprint distance will consist of a 400 meter pool swim, 20km bike loop around campus and 5 km run through campus. All abilities are welcome to participate. This event is being held as a fundraiser for the University of Louisville Swimming and Diving team.

The Department of Health and Sport Sciences, seeks subjects for a study to determine the optimal resistance for workouts done on a high-speed exercise machine. Persons who wish to be subjects should be in good health and have the time to complete participation in the research project, which entail six laboratory visits that last 20 to 30 minutes each.

 

May is Bike Everywhere Month and next Friday, May 19, is Bike To Work Day. Register your intention to get to work on two wheels and you could win a free bicycle at Louisville’s Bike to Work Day celebration at 4th St. Live, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. UofL is also participating in the National Bike Challenge this summer and the UofL Sustainability Council and Get Healthy Now want you to join the fun and ride for Team UofL. Three of the graduating Family Medicine residents, Gerdie Jean, MD, Wanda Lowe, MD, and Amelia Wantland, MD. will present their senior resident Capstone projects covering a broad range of primary care topics. CME category 1 is available for both AAFP and ACCME accreditation.

 

Dr. Merry Lynn Mann, one of our Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility fellows will present, “Genetics: Screening and Risk Reduction Techniques”. She will review the aneuploidy risks in pregnancy, discuss the genetic preconception options available and review the screening tools in pregnancy.

As a part of Neuroscience Grand Rounds, the Dept. of Neurology is pleased to announce that Robert Friedland, MD, will present “the role of bacteria in the mouth, nose and intestines in neurodegenerations and cerebrovascular disease” on May 11 at 8 a.m. in the Baxter Building Auditorium (Lower Level). Join us for a pediatric grand rounds featuring Vinod Balakrishna Rao, MD, FAAP. Rao is assistant professor of pediatrics in the Kosair Charities Division of Pediatric Forensic Medicine at the University of Louisville as well as medical director of Family & Children’s Place at the Kosair Charities Child Advocacy Center. He will present “Dos, Don’ts, and Clinical Pearls in Child Sexual Abuse Evaluation.”
