    DID YOU KNOW

    UofL Criminal Justice major, Captain Suzanne Miller, UofL Air Force ROTC, was awarded a 2017 Patriot Award by the Louisville Armed Forces Committee for Outstanding Air Force ROTC Cadet. She was presented the award at the recent Armed Forces Day Banquet.

     

    FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES

    Vicki Hines-Martin PhD, RN, FAAN, professor and director, Office of Health Disparities and Community Engagement, School of Nursing , presented a paper on “Global mental health, nursing leadership and cross national collaboration” at the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Congress in Barcelona, Spain, in May. The congress was attended by 8,000 nurse leaders from more than 100 countries and members of the World Health Organization.

    Monday, June 12: For the first time in its brief history the Central High School robotics team participated in the world championships, with plenty of help from UofL and students from the Speed School of Engineering.

    Monday, June 12: UofL biology prof Steve Yanoviak is doing research on ants, lightning and other natural wonders in rain forests. UofL’s athletics teams had their highest overall APR scores ever in 2015-16.  Associate AD Christine Simatacolos discusses the recent numbers.
    Tuesday, June 13: UofL’s LGBT Center was one of the first at a southern school. Director Brian Buford talks about the center and its 10th anniversary. Daniel DeCaro is an assistant professor who’s doing research on why people cooperate and why they don’t. Jessica Eaton is a Fulbright Scholar and UofL Medical School student who studied in Malawi, one of the poorest countries on Earth.

Mahsa Badami is an enthusiastic PhD student who came from Iran to study computer engineering at UofL and discusses how she got into artificial intelligence.

    Staff Senate meeting today

    June 12, 2:30 p.m., Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library
    The Staff Senate is the officially-recognized governance group for all staff members at UofL. Established to strengthen the bond between staff members, the Senate also participates in the shared governance process with administration, Faculty Senate and the SGA. Meetings are held monthly and the agenda is posted online. Staff employees welcome.

    LGBT Center invites community to march in Pride Parade Friday

    June 16, 6-9 p.m., corner of Floyd and Market streets, downtown Louisville
    The LGBT Center invites the UofL community to march in the Kentuckiana Pride Parade on Friday, June 16. As the LGBT Center marks its 10th year anniversary, it is hoping to have UofL’s largest parade contingency ever. Brian Buford, the center’s executive director, has been named the 2017 Kentuckiana Pride Parade grand marshal. Wear UofL gear or colors and celebrate 10 years of pride.

    SAC Service Drive closed

    June 16-28
    The service drive beside the SAC along the railroad track will be closed to traffic from June 16-June 28. As a part of the SAC construction, an air handler is going to be replaced which means the basement cap in the service drive will be removed to get the air handler out and install the new one. Persons who park behind the University Club and in the red lot between the Red Barn and University Club should enter from Cardinal Boulevard (the gate will be up to allow access).

    Open Walls Faculty/Staff Art Exhibit opening reception

    June 14, noon to 2 p.m., lower level, Ekstrom Library

    Join us as we kick off the seventh annual Open Walls Faculty/Staff Art Exhibit taking place form June 12-29, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Photographic ARchives Gallery, Archives and Special Collections, lower level of the Ekstrom Library. There are 31 artists this year exhibiting everything from quilts to wood sculptures, and oil paintings to photography.

    Paid healthy volunteers needed for study

    UofL Caregiver Stress Study is looking for healthy European-American females who are between 18-35 years old who have NOT provided care for an ill friend or family member in the last year. Participants will complete a questionnaire and will provide saliva samples for two different time points. Each visit takes approximately 1 hour. We are offering $20 compensation for each visit.
