    DID YOU KNOW

    UofL’s Sustainability Council and the Louisville Water Company are collaborating to educate students, faculty and staff on the value of getting #backtothetap with events, guest lectures, and informative signs above water filling station around campus. For example, consuming the recommended eight glasses of water a day from the tap costs around 50 cents a year, compared to $1,500 for buying bottled water. 

     

    FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES

    John Hale, director of Liberal Studies, is the first speaker in a new three-part series from the Louisville Free Public Library and Kentucky Opera. His presentation, Aug. 30 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Main Library (301 York St.) will focus on Richard Strauss’ opera, Ariadne auf Naxos. His illustrated lecture explores how ancient myths, mod¬ern archaeology, and musical inspiration worked together to create one of the 20th century’s enduring masterpieces.

     

    RESEARCH BULLETIN

    The University of Louisville received five grants last week totaling more than $300,000. See who received the awards along with their projects here.

    Surplus Warehouse Public Auction

    The Surplus Warehouse, 1901 S. Floyd St. on Belknap Campus, will hold a public auction on Saturday, September 9. The doors will open at 8 a.m. with the sale starting at 9:30 a.m. The warehouse will be open for preview on September 8, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The list of auction items is available on the Surplus website  under “Auction List.”

    UofL Florence Nightingale Awards in Nursing

    Do you know an outstanding nurse from Kentucky or Southern Indiana? Nominate registered nurses for the fourth-annual UofL Florence Nightingale Awards in Nursing. Nominations can be made online and the deadline is Sept. 7

     

    UofL’s Got Talent launching in September

    Beginning September 14, 4-6 p.m., University Club; Free
    We will begin opening the Pub Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 4-7 p.m. Each Thursday evening to showcase some of UofL’s talent. This is open to alumni, faculty and staff. Individuals judged most talented will have the opportunity to win some great prizes. We would love to begin Thursday, September 14. Watch for an announcement confirming the date in future UofL Today editions. Contact Linda Johnson via email as soon as possible if you have talent or want to recommend someone.

    Training for Panopto, UofL’s new lecture capture system

    UofL has selected a new lecture capture partner to replace Tegrity. Panopto allows you to create, edit and import video or lecture capture for your course. You can also embed video in Blackboard, live stream or capture video with mobile devices. Panopto is currently available for all users with a Ulink account. Learn the ins and outs of Panopto during a virtual training session (offered using Blackboard Collaborate), available online.

    Bioengineering Dept. Seminar Series: MR Indexing of Cardiac Biomechanics-Strain and Strain-Rates

    Dr. Garth Beache, associate professor of Radiology at UofL’s School of Medicine, will discuss the intrinsic heart wall contractile function and the model of the heart as a basis for a framework for applications such as deep learning models.
