    DID YOU KNOW

    Scoppechio, Kentucky’s largest ad agency, has announced this year’s recipient of its annual Rise Above scholarship to be Kathryn Tilton, a first-year MBA candidate in the University of Louisville’s College of Business. This is the third year the Rise Above scholarship has been awarded to a top female business student at UofL who has demonstrated “an affinity for marketing and an understanding of the business world.”

    Aruni Bhatnagar, PhD, the Smith and Lucille Gibson Chair in Medicine and director of the Diabetes & Obesity Center, has been named one of just 28 “Research Exemplars” in the biomedical field by the P.I. Program through the Center for Clinical and Research Ethics at Washington University in St. Louis and in collaboration with St. Louis University.

    UofL Black Family Conference seeks proposals

    The conference will be held February 23-24, 2018 at Louisville Central Community Center, 1300 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd. The theme: “Elevating the Health and Safety of the Black Family and Community.” Named in honor of Joseph H. McMillian, the conference focuses on the Black family and its issues, challenges and strengths to preserve and overcome barriers. Deadline for proposal is September 30.

    The PreFest Music Festival and LiftUp Fair

    Kentuckiana Heart Walk pep rallies scheduled

    The 25th Annual Kentuckiana Heart Walk is scheduled for Sept. 23. Pep rallies will be held to provide people with more opportunities to become involved in the event. All HSC Team Captains and Walkers will meet Aug. 31 at noon at the Kornhauser Library and Commons Building, HSC Auditorium. Please RSVP by Aug. 28 via email. HSC Team Co-Chairs are Deans Toni M.     International travel information sessions

    The International Center and the Controller’s Office will be holding four information sessions on international travel procedures. Each session will include information on procedures for countries on U.S. government warning lists. Faculty/staff travelers and their department contacts are welcome to attend.     Symposium on Community Engagement in Clinical Research

    August 30, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., HSC Campus – Clinical Translational Research Bldg.
    Join us for a day to help build clinical researchers’ knowledge and skills in the concepts, practices, and ethics of community engagement in research. Hosted by the Kentucky Pediatric IDeA Grant Research Center (K-PIRC), partnering with the UofL Commonwealth Institute of Kentucky (CIK). This course is approved for AMA PRA Category 1 credit.

    Biology Department Seminar Series Presents Guest Speaker: Dr. Yujuan Chen, Virginia Tech

    September 1, noon, 139 Shumaker Research Building
    The topic, “Trees, Soils, and Cities in the Changing Environment from an International Perspective,” will be discussed by Chen, a visiting research scientist in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation at Virginia Tech. She holds a BS degree in horticulture from Beijing Forestry University, a MS degree in Ecology from Chinese Academy of Forestry, and a PhD in forestry from Virginia Tech.

    Cosmic Explorer Workshop

    Do you want to feed your 4-6 year old’s curious mind? Sign your child up for our “Stories in the Sky” workshop. Kids will learn the fascinating stories of some of the constellations and will make their own constellation.     Participants for Prayer Research needed

    Research participants needed! Researchers at the University of Louisville and Penn State are looking for participants to complete a 45-minute survey on their private prayer behaviors and beliefs.     Laugh, dance and relieve stress with Salsa Fridays

    All levels are welcome and no partner required. Enjoy learning the basic moves and core concepts of Salsa Rueda with Cherie Lanier. Salsa Rueda is similar to American square dancing, but for salsa in a circle not a square. A caller calls out simple dance patterns that we will learn in class.
