DID YOU KNOW Research!Louisville is an annual exposition of health-related research in the Louisville Medical Center. The 2017 event, Sept. 12-15, showcases scientific research, lectures and activities for scientists of all ages. Research!Louisville is co-sponsored by UofL, as well as Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation/KentuckyOne Health and Norton Healthcare.
FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES The National Science Foundation selected Dr. Sheron Mark, assistant professor in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education, for the Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers Fellowship. NSF ITEST supports the research and development of innovative models that engage K-12 students in authentic experiences, which build their capacity to participate in the science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the information and communications technology workforce of the future.

Movie screening, ‘Holden On,’ to raise awareness of suicide and mental illnessSeptember 13, 9:30 a.m. to noon, Floyd Theater, Student Activities Center To help raise awareness about suicide and mental illness, the Dean of the School of Public Health and Information Sciences, Craig Blakely, PhD, MPH, was instrumental in bringing the movie, “Holden On,” to Louisville. The movie is based on the true story of Holden Layfield, a 17-year-old boy, who fights to keep his mental illness a secret. Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) TrainingOctober 9-10, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Student Activities Center (SAC), East Classrooms SAC – E102 2100 S. Floyd St.; Free ASIST is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Participants must attend both days. Talks/Seminars/Symposiums Guest Speaker: A part of Research!Louisville 2017September 12, 10 a.m. to noon, KCCTRB, Room 124; Free Sigma XI Distinguished Lecturer Sandra L. Hanson, Professor of Sociology at Catholic University, will speak on: Science for All? Diversity in Science in a Global Economy. This presentation addresses the question of who will do science from a global perspective. It is argued that diversity in science results in better science. Sustainability PGC Energy Tip: Know how electricity is madeWhen you want something turned on, all you do is flip a switch, but how is electricity made? Coal/natural gas is burned by LG&E to heat water to make steam inside the generator at the power plant. The steam spins a big fan called a turbine, which rotates a big magnet around a piece of wire and creates a magnetic field that electrifies the wire. The electric current flows through the wire and is pushed out through high-voltage transformers and lines to school, work or home. Be energy wise daily.
